Not sure why the DD get the image of being an older-gent's watch but I guess it has to do with affordability. I have also seen many young people in their 30s wearing it. It's also very versatile and look just as good with a collared T-shirt and casual wear for weekends. As for reliability, the DD40 has a new improved movement and I don't think any other watch brands can challenge Rolex on sheer robustness and reliability.
I personally love my DD40 and I think YG and Platinum are the best choices. In the end, a matter of personal preference.

So UPDATE. I went to look at a DD40. They had a yellow gold one in with a black dial. It did nothing for me whatsoever. Nothing. Nada. I was surprised.
Maybe I really need to see the rose gold variants to know that's what I'm after, BUT, I tried on a 36mm Day Date in rose gold and that, if I'm brutally honest, shouted Michael Kors to me!! :-( I don't mean to offend anyone with that statement, but that's just how it felt. |

I tried the platinum one recently and loved it. The quadrant dial was amazing. It's def a possibility in the future.

I tried on a brand-new gold DD in Amsterdam about a month ago. It's an amazing and beautifully-designed and constructed thing, but a bit on the loud side of quiet. Or something.
It appealed to a side of me I would rather not acknowledge exists. |

I wear and enjoy my Day-Date with whatever I am wearing, mostly causal. Life is too short to worry. Even at the pool!

If someone was to wear, for instance, a Patek Grand Complication with jeans, then that's dressed down, and the Patek becomes an everyman watch? I'm not sure I buy this dressing down concept, and I would have thought a Rolex sports model would look better with the jeans.

I bought a YG DDII for my 40th a few months ago. Wanted one for a long time. Tried on a 36mm, but it was too small, for me. I love it, and I couldn't give a FIG what anyone else thinks about that. In my experience, these kinds of items tend to engender very strong reactions/opinions in people, and I think its largely due to the fact that they are very expensive.

Thanks, I'll make sure I try the models that really interest me in that case. The black dial was very harsh and not very detailed. I really didn't like it at all.
