With apologies, a Submariner 6536-1 including macros

Good morning all,

My apology is for the fact that I have posted this watch before, but I hope that the addition of some macro images make it worthwhile.

Since the local Rolex AD had told the seller his Submariner 6536-1 was worth well over market value, he took six months to-ing and fro-ing, including trying it at a local auction, before he finally accepted my original offer for it.

I regret to say that the dial is not as perfect as these images suggest, but it is a supermodel's prerogative to ask that her better side be shown :

This version has the two colour text below the centre-post :

I love the wear to the top and bottom of the bezel, typical of the material loss seen in the relatively soft metal of other models like contemporary Milgauss, too. Both the rim and the insert, in fact, are worn away :

You will see from the main picture that this early, original bezel has no minute markers for the first fifteen minutes.

The 6536-1 has a thinner case than other models of the period.

Consistent with a number of my records, it has a 3067xx case number with III.57 case-back and 1030 calibre movement, the movement itself being numbered within the range of others in the relevant batch of a thousand or so watches.

The watch has six service marks from Rolex London on the interior :-)

I wore it in the car this morning and against the walnut interior of my old jalopy it was fun to think how it might have been perceived in the 1950s. We are used to large watches today, but at that time such a large and specialist watch, designed for a relatively new and glamorous purpose, must have been quite striking.

No need to apologize for posting pictures of that rare beauty

I'm always curious as to how these pieces are "found".

You have an outstanding collection, thank you for sharing

The thin curvy cases on these are truly a work of art. Love this reference. Beautiful watch!

Yes they were! I taught myself to dive in 1960, and on one of my first open water dives another diver was wearing a Submariner with an OCC dial. I was hooked! It took three years before I could afford one, but I have worn one or another sub almost constantly ever since.

Wow, nice story

It's wonderful that some of that first generation of owners still have their watches, however tatty they may now be.

Ha-ha! Jocke is an inspiration. His composition, use of light and technical brilliance are in a different league from my utilitarian celebrations of the watches' odd little features.
