Montblanc vs montegrappa

Hi guys, I'm kinda new to pens so was looking for some advice and comments, was looking for a roller ball or ball point pen for work, I don't have tons of writing to do just signing my name to forms and filling out qa reports. Of the two brands which one would you prefer for a roller ball or ballpoint? Which models would you recommend? And are there any other brands to consider? Thanks in advance for the help!

Hi Breadstickz,

Odd we are from the same city looking for basically the same thing. If you go for the Montegrappa I would suggest you stick with the ballpoint pen. I've found that they are, overall, a long pen & the ballpoint might be easier to handle versus other MG rollervall vs rollers. As for MB, I have no experience to pass on to you. I did not check them out.

I did however find the Ducale & the Linea Nero quite lovely in person, more so the Linea Nero Uno. The lines really add another dimension to the pen.

Good luck,
Judy

Be careful with the Montblanc rollerball refills. They are awful in my opinion as they last for only a very short time even if used sparingly. The ballpoint refills last forever.

Have you considered a fountain pen?

Thanks for the input! Great minds think a like , if you don't mind me asking where did you go for your purchase? I went to berani at bayview village to look at the montegrappa's but their selection was rather limited

I have also considered fountain pens but as I'm unfamiliar with them my worry is all the stories about leakage and I generally print as opposed to cursive and am not sure how that holds up with fps. Just for my knowledge, what would you think would be a good fp to start out on terpmedic?

I have been using a Fp as a daily writer for the past 18 months. It has never leaked. I haven't had any issues with it whatsoever.

I must admit that my FP knowledge is limited but the MB 149 is a classic of course. If you want something thinner, the 146 is a winner too. I'd recommend you go look at these in person as you'll end up dropping a lot of change on the pen.

The other issue with FP is deciding on a nib. Fine or medium seem to be pretty common for daily writers.

Love my Montegrappa mule,my newest pen...it's getting a nice patina rather quickly....Google kenroindustries.com to look at them. I love the Fortuna Collection, and they are in my price point. .. then I look elsewhere to buy...saved 100.. buying on ebay..

Montblanc is far better made than Montegrappa, across the board. Better materials, better engineering and construction. I know this because I was a brand manager for Montegrappa and also worked for Montlbanc.

There is a reason the rollerballs dont last as long as the ball point. The rollerball is filled with fountain pen ink which is water based, much more ink is deposited onto the page. This is why it needs to be capped when not being used, it dries out. The ballpoint is filled with oil based ink and therefore does not need to be capped. You'll get about 20 pages per rollerball versus 200 for the ballpoint. However writing with a rollerball is much nicer and the result is much more like a fountain pen.

Thanks so much for the info! Was looking everywhere for the rough number of pages before it would need a refill and couldn't find them anywhere!

I am a MB lover, but I will never again own a MB Rollerball.

Their refills are junk. Just my never to be humble opinion.

If you are going to spread the green for a MB anything, go for a ballpoint or a fountain pen.

The pencils are okay also, but never a rollerball. Nyet!

I was at Laywine's in Yorkville one day & they have a nice selection from a variety of brands. I did find them overpriced compared to places like Stylo.ca or Amazon. I've never purchased from Ebay but there are some with good pricing as well. I'll probably stick to Stylo or Amazon if I can find something there. If you decide on Visconti, check out Act II Fine Jewelry at Yonge & Steeles, I found they had cheaper pricing than other locations & if I recall correctly, the same as Stylo but with the added benefit of inspecting the pen in person before buying.
