5712 Water Resistance
I had my sights set on a 5711 as my next Patek, but I was considering a 5712 as well. I didn't give any thought to water resistance until I researched the 5712 in more detail, but the 60m rating has me back to the 5711. Obviously neither is a dive watch, but I don't want to worry about normal use, hand washing, or the occasional swim. Frankly it's one of the things that irritates me about my Speedy Pro and why I just default back to throwing on a Rolex more often than not. It will be the priciest watch I've bought, and worrying about damaging it would take a lot of the joy out of owning it. Has water resistance played into anyone else's decision process when picking their Nautilus model?

Not for me... I don't think you'll have an issue showering/washing hands and light swimming with the 5712... Just make sure you have the seals changed etc every couple years.
I was also considering the 5711, but ultimately chose the 5712 in the end. Just a lot more watch for a little bit more money.

my first patek was a 5712/1a, so my advise for u is the same. Not get your mind clouded with the WR issue, with the 5712 you are getting complications that after all is what Patek is all about. The 5711 to me is a beautiful dress watch, is that what you want go for it.

I never really swam with my ex 5712 but washed hands, washed it with water and nothing happened, I think you can swim lightly, which means no movements which could put too much pressure and would amount to more than 60m WR, for me it's a much nicer watch than the 5711, love the moon phase, nicer movement, and sure it's not a watch to swim with, for that I have my AP diver, in any case would you really want to swim with a 30K watch? I swim with my AP but it's really made for that, I would not swim other than lightly with a 5711, I mean in case of any problem it could cost you a lot of cash, why risk it, even with the AP when I know I'm going to the beach I usually don't take it, IMO a watch needs to have a minimum of WR, for hand washing and washing the watch itself, but why would you want to swim with watches worth tens of K's, for me the risk isn't worth it, just better to take it off IMO. So get the 5712, and just don't take it when you know you'll swim...

The 120 meter WR is the overwhelming reason i chose the 5711.
If it was a Patek on a leather strap, then lower WR would be fine, but it's on a bracelet and should be able to swim without worries. The 5712 does not have the higher WR rating because it has a snap back vs a screw back in the 5711.

I wouldn't worry about the water resistance that much. Should be fine for light swimming, washing hands etc. 5712 is the way to go

Thanks for all the feedback! The 5712 does seem to be a relatively better value as far as price vs complications. They're both stunning watches!

No problem swimming with either a 5712 or a speedy, Omega has confirmed this.

This for me as well. Truthfully, there is no wrong answer here. If between the 5711 and the 5712, it really depends on the future of your collection. I went with the 5712r and the 5726/1A. My thoughts were about complications. What sucks for me is in the last year my eyesight has gotten to where I cannot see the AC or moon phase without reading glasses :{ Also, after seeing the 5711 in person at our GTG in Vegas, it's hands down nicer than the 5726. And the 5711r is not much more than the 5712r. Actually, now that I've said all of that, I also realize that I always want what I don't have.
All hard choices. Good luck.
