I ink the uninkable!!!!

I was going through my fountain pen database today (http://www.fountainpennetwork.com/fo...-for-download/) and just realized that I have so much freeking $$$ "invested" in them and that it is rather disconcerting! I could live "several" years on the money that I have invested pens in order to make them a part of my collection. I started in 1975. Call me insipid, but do read on!

So then..... the next question is why have I done so much damage to my bank accounts for this "hobby"? About every pen storage box is filled. I really have no more room for any others, but that does not satiate my desire for more.

I will suppose it is just like everything else! A tangible investment!

Some will say that acquiring fountain pens is not an investment! But if that is true then neither is coin collecting, stamp collecting, mineral collecting, gun collecting, gold collecting, jewelry collecting, car collecting, or any number of other collectables that are deemed as hobbies.

So then there is the JOY!!! Where can you purchase joy!!!???!!! I know several places and many of them have Fountain Pen in the description!

I do not care about the $$$ side of pen collecting. I collect for the joy of owning, handling, touching, and writing with some of the best fountain pens in the world. I ink the uninkable! I write with fountain pens that have been "preserved" for decades in their pristine "new uninked" conditions. Why? Because a pen was engineered to be written with and not stuck in a box on a shelf!

Therefore I collect for the joy of it all!

If I die tomorrow, those left behind will be a bit disconcerted when it comes what to do with them all. But I will be satisfied that I have written with the best fountain pens that human engineering has ever conceived! And that is just fine with me...!

I will state, as an avid gun, knife, watch, and pen lover, that they are NOT investments but rather hedges against inflation. That said, yes you can make money some above and beyond the rate of inflation but you are also likely to loose some, especially if bought new, as well. But if you have a decent collection and you maintain it well, you will not loose money as a hole.

BTW I totally agree with inking them all and using them, carrying them and enjoying the hell out of them!

You do have a very good chance of breaking even or at least enjoying the pen/guns/car etc for free over time if you buy limited/rare pieces. I don't recommend hedging on scotch though. No bottle in my collection has made it out alive!

Ok .... well I agree!

In all seriousness... FPs are not a true investment. But they are a tangible collection with great worth.

They will increase in value with the rate of inflation or more so with rarity. Regardless I enjoy my collection and will continue to add to it like a coin collector does with his collection. But then again... they cannot do anything with a coin but look at it. I can write with mine!

I predict the day of the fountain pen is coming! I see them catching on like good scotch and swiss automatic watches, with prices to match, I might add

Absolutely!!!

I have entertained filling my fountain pens with a nice single malt Scotch but haven't found a way to do that without melting the seals on them. But am still looking for the solution!

I kind of hate to say it but the small alcohol capacity was what made me put this pen on the back burner 1 oz of 180 proof moonshine would work but I'm going to need to fill a 2-3ml internal pen flask with powdered Xanax otherwise to relax at work lol.

The only pens that I bought and have appreciated in value (excluding those buys that the sellers didn't know the true value of the pen) are the MB Hemingway (which I didn't keep - stupid me), Christie and Proust. All others are losses and some was been very painful.

So, just use the pens.
