An old Rolex story and quiz

A friend of my fathers ran the watch counter at Tiffanys in manhattan throughout the 70's and into the early 80's. Mark. He's the one that got me into this addiction as a late teenager..It was a big deal then..all the big names were regulars there. He had Rockefellers and the like who were such big watch nuts, that Mark would simply send a watch to each of their homes whenever something came in that he thought they would like. Tiffany dialed rolexes, AP, etc...

Whenever I talk to him about what it's like now, he always laughs. Says they couldn't give away Daytonas and subs in the 70's. Tiffany dialed explorer 1's and 36 mm datejusts. Two tone, were all the rage. Consequently, I have my fathers tiffany dialed explorer.

Anyway, he tells me this. He had all ranks of fame and fortune in their on a regular basis. From popes to presidents. Every celebrity imaginable, Elvis was a regular. But one celebrity, when he used to come in, the place went silent. The women covered their mouths in disbelief. The men didn't make eye contact The employees all smiled and waited for him to say hello. He said you could hear a pin drop.

Any guesses?

Wow...right out of the gate. Yep. Sinatra.

He said there was an audible gasp when he came in. And let's be honest. He was bigger than the popes and had nearly the power of the president..lol

In 1979 I was 11 years old. My dad took me down to visit mark at work on a Saturday, which I thought was weird. Anyway, we get there, and about 10 minutes later, he grabs me by my shoulders and says " do not freak out. Remember I work here, but turn around and look towards the front"

There's this big dude (remember, I was 11), pink silk shirt, leather pants....I had no idea who it was. It was Gene freaking Simmons. With NO MAKEUP ON! Which at the time, if you were a KISS fan, you hadn't seen any of them with no makeup on. Seriously, I about died.

I guess he was a watch crazy dude, because he was a regular at the watch counter.

Very cool stories Thanks for sharing.

Reminds me of Jake's (of Jake's Rolex World blog) interview with T. Walker Lloyd (a retired Rolex executive) and how he gave all these celebrities Rolexes (e.g., Redford, Eastwood, etc.). Link below to the podcast if anyone's interested.

Incredible voice, maybe the best I've ever heard but he didn't write his own songs so is not a major talent in my eyes, writing reveals the true genius.

His voice was incredible, but the music aspect was just a small piece of the Sinatra pie. He had lawmakers and mobsters at all levels on speed dial.
