Just started writing with my Safari. I love it. But I see nibs constructed out of different materials, such as gold. What are the advantages of nibs that are not steel?

In the case of a safari, the 14kt nib that fits that pen (Z57) is "springy" to some extent and feels softer on the paper. You get some line variation with pressure. The stainless nib can be just as smooth but gold is just more interesting to write with in this case on this pen. I just finished a lamy LX with an emporium 14kt nib and it's awesome! Unfortunately you do have to pay to play though for gold nibs. With a safari though you could be in it for about $100 usd and have awesome gold nib performance. I don't think there's many pens out there for $100 with a gold nib. I have no complaints about the LX with the emporium nib. In all honesty, I have two Montegrappa's with similar sized/shape 18kt nibs and I like the 14kt emporium nib much better. The 18kt nib is nice but they just have a sort of wet noodle feel to them, comparatively speaking.
