Normally it should be but I read that Platinum DD retails for 82K while Platinum Daytona 116506 is 75K.

At 100K or more, how many are they going to be able to move? Can't imagine the market is that deep.

Because gold is worth 30+% more than platinum. Platinum is the baser metal. $1253/oz for gold vs only $935/oz for platty.

The wisdom I have read on the Forum is that a DD in platinum with fluted bezel does not exist because of the complications to machine the fluted bezel in platinum. If this is true, I am sure Rolex could find a way to make it happen if they really wanted to; but this is the usual explanation of why there is no DD in PT with fluted bezel.

Didn't you hear? I know a guy who knows a guy whose best friend's brother in law's buddy works at an AD, and there will either be a platinum Sub or GMT released in Basel 2017.
In regard to the OP, it wouldn't surprise me if one is released at some point, but agree the price would be astronomical. Plenty of us would be all over it as a SS watch, but the PM kills it. |

I think the fluted bezel argument is bogus....if jewelers can make rings, necklaces, bracelets, etc. out of platinum then Rolex can machine a fluted bezel. This is 2016, there is too much technology in CAD/CAM and machining techniques to use that as an excuse. That may have been the case 30 years ago, but not anymore.
Platinum SkyD would be sweeeett! |

According to Rolex, the fluted bezels of today are vestiges of the bezel flutes that were actually functional for opening the case to wind the watches.
The Sky-Dweller's fluted bezel is the first in many, many decades that is actually functional. Rolex distinguishes metals by some watch feature, it seems, so if Rolex produces a platinum Sky-Dweller, it will have to be distinguished by something other than the bezel.

It's an interesting one, due to the AC comp and command bezel a Plat SkyD would become the de jure flagship model of their range and the most expensive, but I think Rolex are in love with the Daytona and like having that as their top dog.

I imagine the demand for glacier dials would be large. Buy a WG SkD and swap the dial... voila! Instant 326936.

My guess is that Rolex hasn't offered one because they do not think it would sell.
I will wager that Rolex will never offer a platinum submariner. |
