I always deal in a bank branch, money deposit at the counter with the watch, no argument or suspicious needed.

Sorry to hear OP.

I've done a cash deal once, and have to say it made me nervous carrying the amount.

I sincerely believe folks like this get their karma in due time.

There were two of them, later realised a third person was milling around. We agree a price and I counted the money, I put it in my pocket and the strange thing thinking now is one of them left leaving the first person asking us to walk him to the pub exit, he then blew a kiss and ran. When I went back inside to get my wife, who turned up with my daughter and friends for our usual Friday night pint, to count the money, she realised that the bundle of supposedly fifty pound notes had just one on the outside, within the roll was paper. I'm not covered and this retails now at £6,750, please don't do the same thing. Police taken for fingerprints but no hope of recovering now. Also tried to go on Rolex site to let them know and it doesn't exist.
Highlighted the op's statement about counting the money

A lot of posters with hind sight. To the OP, I can sympathize with you. Same type of thing happened to me years ago in VN with a money changer.

All of the above! So sorry this happened but I'm also confused about the money being counted.

A lot of posters do not realize that con men do this for a living and are very skilled, much like magicians, at deceiving the eye for a split second. And much of the populace is susceptible to being conned by these professional con men.

OP has my sympathy. It is easy to think you would never be conned until it actually happens to you.

That's what I was thinking. If David Blayne can make a frog appear in your mouth, someone can certainly make you think you're holding a roll of currency when it's actually just paper.

Very strange history:

1) From your posts I understand that you counted money, your brother in law checked that money are real, you put them into pocket.

2) How is kissing related in this story? I would never ever would allow another man to kiss me.

3) This story seems strange as it seems that you are telling only part of story.

Also, buying Rolex in a pub seems for me very strange. I would understand if you set up meeting Rolex store (to check authenticity of watch), bank or some other well lit and reputable places :)

Time to post a new ad with a different watch (something not real) and have a friend meet the guy.

Not sure how to handle the rest without the police. A confrontation would probably not go well. Who knows these days. I wonder if the police would help at all with a sting operation? It seems like it would be easy to do.

I was going to use the word Gypsy but know that I do not wish to offend but there are people that can con or sell snow to an Eskimo or cheat you out of your cloths and you don't know it. I'm a retired police diver and some of these stories do not surprise me. Con artists have gotten more sophistated.

Pound note deals for high value items in pubs involving people unknown always have a high risk-as you have found out to your cost unfortunately.

A bit late now but always safer to meet in a branch of your bank, conclude the deal there and pay the notes into your account before the buyer walks off with the watch.
