5131 vs 5970

Dear All,

The market values of 5970 and 5131 are currently similar.
I understand that they are two completely different time pieces.
But from a collector's point of view, which one is more desirable if you are interested to both and you can only choose one?

Thank you very much for your opinion.

Best, Henry

I dont know about this model in particular and guess its much like the 5070 v 5170 argument.

What i do know is that a 5131 at list is CHF 60 000 and thus is significantlhy at a premium to the list of say the 5270. Thus value wise the 5131 is the better value enhancer if you buy at retail.

I am referring to those out of production ones, ie 5970 G/J/R vs 5131 J/G.
If you can just get one at the market price, which one will you prefer more?
Thanks!

5131 at 60k is the better deal.

I am very fortunate to have acquired a 5131R at list price.
But just want to know the preference of our fellow members if you can choose either 5131J/G or 5970 (both have ceased production and can't be bought at list prices)

It seems that 99.9% of the value of 5131 lies in the enamel dial, but highly sought after by patek collectors.
While 5970 is the iconic perpetual chronograph of Patek, and often praised as the most balanced one among all 6 generations of perpetual chronograph.

These two time pieces are co-incidentally having similar market value now, hence would like to try comparing them.

I kind of like 5970 a little bit more. But that's just me and I would be keen to know the thought of other fellow members.

Thanks.

I currently own 5131r and 5970r having previously owned 5970g and p.Having been discontinued for a longer time the prices of the 5970 have seemed to level off here where as the 5131 seems to be dropping somewhat as evidence by recent auction sale of 5131g for 96k premium included. As stated two totally different timepieces with the 5970 IMHO being the perfect watch in terms of size, balanced dial, complications, etc. The 5131's are truly works of art and more of a conversation piece than a useful daily wearer for me as I am not a world traveler.Long term I believe the 5970 will continue to appreciate in value and the 5131's may as well if Patek cannot find someone to replace the mother/son enamel dial team and discontinue them altogether.

Of the 2, I would rather have a 5970, but acquiring a 5131 at list retail price is extremely attractive financially.

Of the two, the 5970 gets my vote.

I much prefer the 5970 and PCCs, I'm not really a fan of WTs, while they are beautiful and useful to some, they are a little too much in the artsy category and don't look enough like a watch to my eye.

5970 if you said to pick one. The 5131 is a beauty and can be had for 95-105. You won't see a 5970 at that price

I agree that in general a PCC is a better watch to have than an enamel dial WT. However both vintage WTs and vintage PCCs have auctioned for over a million dollars recently. So in 50 years, who knows what will happen to the values of these watches!

I agree in terms of value horology terms the grand complication 5970 wins this one.
I could have gone for a 5270/5970 but for me the 5131R won because of my connection to World travel. I get more satisfaction looking down at that World enamel dial & seeing 19 out of those 24 cities ive been to and one day pass it on to my daughter to remind her of her old mans travels and adventures

Dear All,
Thank you so much for your advice.
5970 seems to be the winner, especially like Roger's 5970P
Though 5131 also has a sentimental advantage, just like Andy's 5131R
On hind sight, I should have persevered in getting a mint 5970 instead of getting a new 5270G back in 2015.....

Best, Henry

I take the opposite view to most, every 5131 is unique, every 5970 is the same. Still, if we all thought the same what a boring place it would be! (and what do I know, I love the new 5711P)

No bad decisions here! And nothing wrong with the lovely 5270g you chose beforehand either!

I prefer the world timer, the dial is amazing, and PCCs leave me cold.
