TRF, tell me about humidifiers....

My house is at about 25% humidity as it has gotten cold in Chicago. My skin is starting to crack, static electricity in the house has picked up, etc etc. Ive heard these things are useless unless you get a good one. any suggestions?

My parents live near Chicago and used them for years, but stopped when they got older. Humidifiers can be a PITA to maintain. And they can be the source of some nasty respiratory problems.

They use moisturizers now. Lotions for their skin and water in their CPAP.

My mother lives in Chicago and was experiencing the problems you describe. She purchased a humidifier to use in winter, and it has made all the difference.

This is what she purchased.
Essick AirCare.

I just purchased one of these and installed it yesterday.
Stadler Oskar

Humidifiers are relatively inexpensive, so it's easy to try one.

The comment about cleaning/maintenance is true...they are a PITA as they require diligent cleaning every two weeks or so.

I should add my humidifier if a whole home humidifier. It's attached to my furnace.

If you go to Costco, they sell a nice one with a large tank that can last for 2-3 days. We have 3 of them and they absolutely help.

I have just been dealing with this in cold Minnesota. I have had high tech versions from Honeywell--but electronics are prone to premature failure. My contractor recommended an old dependable model--Honeywell HE280. All you have to do is turn it on, open the vent, and remember to change the water filter twice each heating season. There is a humidity percentage dial adjustment near the unit--does not connect to digital control panel for your heating/airconditioning system. Does the trick, in my case, and very reliable.

I have this one. The fans are noisy, but it puts out some serious humidity.

TRF, tell me about humidifiers....

I just put out our humidifiers last night. I could already feel my skin drying out.

We have a couple Honeywell ultrasonic humidifiers. I've tried the warm air and fan versions but didn't like the noise or the clean up

We have bought air purifiers and humidifiers from this company. We use their products in our office and residences. Their website contains informative descriptions and info about the products. The good stuff is pricey, but well worth it IMHO.

I wanted to use an ultrasonic, but discovered our water is too hard (unit came with a test strip). So...ordered an evaporative humidifier from the same company. It's pretty quiet...but not silent. I do dread the bi-weekly cleaning.
