Please let me in on the jumbo (40th anniversary model)

I may get some flack for this but why is the jumbo the most coveted royal oak?

I know of its horological significance but do people buy this model because of its heritage or because of the way it looks and wears? There may be an impression it may look too plain.

For those who currently own this, did its horological value (Genta DNA, etc) outweigh its aesthetics when upon purchasing?

Please don't get me wrong. I know this is a FANTASTIC timepiece. Just torn between this or the royal oak chronograph. I fancy the chrono more aesthetically, but I may be missing out on something very important with the 15202.

Who said this is the most coveted royal oak? If anything the 44 RG is.

Well it's the closest to the original, same movement, ultra thin, so yes it's a really cool puece but I. Hose a 15309 blue dial as the lack of second hand was too much for me, but Insaw one in real and if to talk just on loons and esthetics I do think it's the most beautiful RO. But if you find the chrono more appealing get what you like the most

Because that is not a royal oak. And I highly doubt the 44rg is the most coveted ROO either. More to ROO than the 44mm standard line up.

Excuse me its a royal oak OFFSHORE. And as far as mass popularity, every dealer I speak to sells the 44 RG more than any other AP.

Pretty sure the 15400 and chrono versions sells more than the jumbo as well. Same with their gold counter parts.

The 15407 sells instantaneously as well.

I don't think sales volume equates to how coveted a watch is. YMMV.

I thought the 15202 was limited production? I know for sure that my AD only gets allocated 1 per year.

Sorry, I meant among all the other RO models. Not including offshores. Hope am getting this clearer now.

I think the 15300 was really becoming the RO to have, but with this anniversary Jumbo, that is pretty close to the original, which is such a seminal sports watch, this has become the most coveted. Obviously sales of the 15400 will be higher as they are cheaper and more easily available.

I'd agree that on the horological scale, the 40th Jumbo is definitely one of the top coveted APs (even more so than some of the amazing but gaudy hyper complicated offshores). Though its true that its mainly the heritage that seems to bring it there...

I've had both Jumbo and ROC. The Jumbo is special due to its history but the look and feel is amazing. If you get to see it in person then you will understand. ADs may sell more Offshores but the Jumbo is more sought after by collectors. Not easy for ADs to get Jumbos due to the limited production.

As a jumbo owner all the items mentioned factored into why I purchased it and why I still consider it my favorite watch. It's history, most original to the Genta design, perfect shape and size, extra thin, very comfortable, simple two handed dial, somewhat low production (I've talked to several large ADs and they only get 2/yr). All these things add up together to make it what it is.

I think the 15202 is really respected and admired for its adherence to the original design from 1972.

Since we are on the Rolex forum this analogy should apply: if Rolex came out with a re-issue of the milsub 5517, the DRSD 1665, or Paul Newman Daytona and it was that close to the originals, people would gobble them up.

The 15202 is very light and comfortable and the skill it takes to make it along the beauty of the craftsmanship are a sight to behold.

I really considered the 15202 but found the non screw down crown, lack of seconds hand and price tag to be too many negatives so I "settled" for a black 15400.

I still wonder if I should've held out for the 15202

I've actually been able to try this on a couple of times. Initial impression was that it may seem too plain after a while. About its 39mm size, I am still unsure whether this one is for me (coming from offshores and 41mm's). The extra thin case is a plus for me though. No seconds hand doesn't really matter, although I've been told that the non quickset date may end up being more of a headache down the line.

However, based on everyone's answers, it seems that the jumbo's heritage plays a very vital role when owning one.

I'd venture to guess the RB2 Ti is the most coveted ROO.

I'd perosnally choose a 320 or 400 over a 202 due to size and the seconds hand.

I find it very hard to believe the 44RG is the volume seller. I love it but price alone should prevent it from being the volume AP.

The 15202 is the perfect size and has the gorgeous rotor that makes it special. How ever,it is not rare , can have one in a few weeks.

You would think so, but every dealer I speak to, sells like 2-3 per month they will tell me.

And the 15407s are like sold out till 2018. At least from dealers not selling at retail or above.

All the things plus the non quickset date bothtd me but wanted to have at least 1 RO in my life, and blue of clurse, so I was lucky enough to find a 15300 blue dial unworn. But I am leaving it in my safe for an undetermined time, I will start wearing it when I have the urge for a new watch, have had 2 PP incomings in the mast 6 months so no urge for a new one just now, but will surely have later on, that's when I will start wearing it.
