Girls are out on a trip, so it is only my son and myself for lunch. We go to a place we really love (no wine fee)

I take a bottle of 2012 Smith & Hook cabernet. Nothing fancy, as this is a good daily cab...

Impressive! This has evolved beautifully!!!!!! I found some sediments, which were not common on the last '12 bottle I opened last year. I only have one left, but clearly reached its peak. I never thought S&H (for our non US TRFers, this retails for under $22us) would evolve like this. IMHO, not a wine to age for 10 years, but 5 have worked it's magic!

Paired with grilled octopus and baby goat....magnificent!!!

I know we have some amazing cellar-worthy reds in our wine thread, Smith & Hook is amazing after 5 years. For the price, a bargain!

G, does the restaurant allow you to take your own bottle of wine to enjoy whilst having your meal at no cost?

Never heard of that before in UK.

Excellent idea instead of being forced to drink some awful overpriced wine.

What's in it for the restaurant?

Gerardo, as a wine junkie myself I had never heard of Smith & Hook before you introduced it to me via the forum. I picked up a bottle before Christmas and was very impressed. I would say it is probably the best Cab under $30. My local wine store has it for $17..you simply cant beat it for the money. The complexity and depth is more advanced than your average Cab for that kind of money. Thanks for the introduction!

They realized that people who like wine would look for new options, otherwise, thou would visit from time to time. The options were:

-Have a never ending wine selection to keep customers 'intrigued', increasing costs exponentially or...

-Focus on kitchen. Make amazing dishes and allow people to bring their wine (only wine, does not apply to other liquors). Wine aficionados come back VERY often as you can experiment and taste with a fantastic meal with YOUR wine. If you looks at the ratio of wine vs non wine drinkers, we are less than 30%, so they are making money on food, soft drinks, beer and liquor. Me: happy! We use that place for tastings. Open a new bottle and bring four dishes: seafood, pork, poultry and beef. We taste the wine with each dish and find the best pairings, a fun exercise that allows us to taste, taste and taste.

It is a fantastic cab for the price. I kept some '12 bottles just t o see how it evolved, as I know this is not a 'store for a gazzilion years' cab; found it a beautiful evolution yesterday.

I was inspired to give it a go following this but can't seem to find any UK importers.

UK members... any ideas?
