GMT with Tiffany Dial

Hello All---I am new to the forum. A few years ago I gave my son my Rolex GMT as a high school graduation present. I bought the watch at the Tiffany store on 5th Avenue in NYC in 1984. I believe it's a 16750 (not certain though). It is stainless with a jubilee bracelet and Tiffany & Co on the dial. Pepsi bezel. It has always seemed odd to me that the watch had the jubilee bracelet instead of the oyster. Isn't the oyster more typical for this model? I have had it serviced maybe 3-4 times since 1984. Always at Sutter's here in Chicago. All the parts are original. Can anybody tell me anything about this watch? Any ideas on approximate value? If I don't have the original box and papers how can I prove it's authenticity?

Jubilee was an option on this model also. As for the dial do you have a receipt from Tiffany if you do post it as it adds value and authenticity to the dial

Yes, having the Tiffany paperwork and/or the Rolex paperwork stamped by Tiffany could more than double the value.

I was pretty young when I bought it so it never really occurred to me to keep the box or receipts. But I'll lob in a call to Tiffany on Monday and see if they keep records that far back. Are fake Tiffany faces common? I guess it's all academic since I wouldn't want to sell the watch and it's not mine anymore anyway!

One of the most faked dials out there. Without proof, it's just another GMT with a dial that may or may not be real just like all the others on the market. The paperwork is what gives it the additional value in this case.

Welcome to the Forum!

Great to see original owners of these fine time pieces.

Make sure you pass on to your son that if he ever gets it serviced not to have the dial replaced. Hard to tell but it is possible the hands were already replaced one time, if not a big plus. Ensure the dial is not only replaced for the Tiffany reference but also because it is a matte dial, highly sought in this model reference/time period.
Box and papers could have added quite a bit to the full set package and Tiffany provenance.
Congrats and thanks for sharing!

Thank you everybody for your valuable input. I will be certain to pass along your comments to my son (who is now in medical school). One more question: barring finding the box and receipt and/or documentation from Tiffany...is there an independent body or authority who could certify the face as authentic?

Have seen recent discussion on the same topic about acceptable blotters, etc., and some that should not be. yadda yadda

Honestly, you know where you purchased it.
Do you think someone telling you otherwise will make you change that story?

If anything, when you are able, take a picture of the dial with the writing unobstructed so others can see what an authentic writing should look like..

Unfortunately nobody can Tiffany included.

Simply put, if you bought it at Tiffany, what are you worried about?

Doesn't any of your 3-4 service receipts mention the dial?

I don't know...but that's a good idea. I'll check into that (assuming I can find them). Sutter's may also have records. I asked my son Andy to send me a close-up high-res photo of the Tiffany face which I will post. So at least folks will see what it's supposed to look like (although I've read there's a lot of variation).

Sharp

Sharp watch. I like the jubilee band on the vintage Coke and Pepsi GMTs

Thank you for all your kind comments and advice. I have attached a close-up photo of the Tiffany face (unfortunately partially obscured by the 24 hour hand). I was never crazy about the Jubilee bracelet. I bought the watch because I admired one that a college friend had (his had the Oyster bracelet). My GMT replaced an earlier Rolex that I had bought...I'm not sure exactly what it was. Maybe just a "Rolex Oyster Date". Basic stainless with a silver face, date, and Oyster band. I gave it to my older brother and he still wears it 33 years later. Beautiful in its simplicity.

Beautiful indeed but like I said earlier sadly enough without paperwork you're the only who knows that it's original.
