Hello,

I saw this example of 1603 and i loved it

My only concern was, does this watch come originaly with a bezel like this? Is it period correct?

Thoughts..

No, should have the engine turned bezel...

A bath and some Polywatch would do wonders for that. Don't submerge it without a depth test.

I agree, it's a common swap, but a 1603 should have the SS/engine bezel: that's a 1601 bezel YG on it as it stands.

Is it too expensive at $3500 because of that? Been looking for one for sometime and i actually like this example

Bezel can be easily swapped to, not a big issue

Overpriced. Should be closer to $2,000.

Way too expensive and for $3500 they could at least clean the watch

Like I said if you want a bezel I have several.

This was the least expensive common version. In the days before so much counterfeiting and tightness of parts, the Rolex rep here actually told the dealer to promote the conversion...basically saying if you have a looker who wants steel and gold but doesn't feel that they can make the price...sell them the steel version...telling them they can always "upgrade" at a later date. Rolex made the trim parts and dials easily available and most dealers stocked them. I have a number of bezels that were "take offs" at the local AD. I've sold a few off but I have some left for people who are going back the other way.

That being said I sold a mint 1601 with WG bezel last november serviced head only for 1800.00

Right? Like soap and water and a toothbrush for 3500.00?

Where are you finding Datejusts below $3k? Everything I've seen with original parts (dial, bands) is pretty much in that range.

I just had a 1970 1601 with box/papers offered to me at $4500!

The only bargains I'm seeing are out of Japan and S Korea on ebay. Scary stuff lol. 16XX DJs under 2K.

Dickson Tai has a bunch of 1601s that he recently listed. And even more probably not listed since it is a very common reference. He probably has other dial colors lying around. He is a very well respected dealer. Ill see if I can find the listings..

UPDATE:

Just found this recent listing and others from Dickson (dtwatches on here), this one for $2200USD

Here is another one he just listed for $1600USD (Rolex clasp, but Non Rolex band, hence the price)

Here is a linen dial for $2200USD

Is this bezel correct to a 1603 date just?

SS DJ's are in the low $2K range all the time in US.

Brokers give $1200-1500 here in the South, then turn them around asking $2500 and take $2200 all the time.

Hit watchrecon and search - many sellers have them at $2K.

I know this question was asked here many times, but is there any difference between the 1601 and the 1603 apart from the bezel? Are they totally identical except the bezel?

I just sold one with box, no papers, for $2,650. It was a wide boy with a very early hacking 1570, so that may have played into it.
