Rolex identification
I am trying to get some more information about this watch, which I believe to be from 1952 (based on serial number). I was directed here from another forum, and would ultimately like to get some idea concerning its value. Thanks!

I was told by some Rolex afficionados not to have it cleaned up if I were interested in selling it; rather, leave it with its natural patina and let the new owner decide for him- or herself.

Do not clean it or do anything else to it. If you going to sell, sell it as is. I would guess it's model 4220. Dial shows some wear, bracelet has seen better days, but still nice. My guess would be between $700 and $900 for the head with the band.

Later than 52.
It's either late 53 or beyond. |

Thanks for the info. I'm pretty sure the serial number on it is 849725, but it's a little hard to see. From what I understand, that number would make it either 1952 or 1963? This is an arcane subject, but I would really like to pin down the model number, at least.

The model number should be in between the lugs on the opposite side. If not it will be inside the case-back. 849xxx is going to push the end 53 for me. No pre 54 serial lists are official at all. The date also should be inside the caseback.
I just serviced a 6105 dj serial 858,xxx with IX - 53 in the caseback. SWISS only dial. Remember the year ENDS with the number on the list...not begins. The indicator is the SWISS rather than SWISS MADE. This is right around the time they switched. |

I believe it says BREVET (rather than the model number) on the opposite side of the side with the serial number.

Very often they will say BREVET AND the model number.
You just have to open it. Then all mystery will be solved. You will have the model number and the date. |
