Watch Winders do your need one?

Hi I am new to Rolex Forums so I hope I have posted this in the right place.
I have had a my Rolex GMT black bezel/face since 2002 and wear it every day and love it.
I recently bought a GMT Black/Blue and intended to sell my old GMT but I now decided I love it to much to part with it, so it looks like the New GMT might end up in the safe, do you need to use a watch winder if the watch is storage or is it okay to keep it in the box unwound?

Hello and welcome.

Of the 3 staff at my AD I spoke with, two said watch winders were just a convenience and nothing more.......and the other one wanted to sell me one for $400.

The horologist said if they had value, every Rolex in their store would be using one. I believe they just wear out your watches faster.

Even if my watches only had a 12 hour power reserve I wouldn't get one. It's always fascinating winding a watch you're about to put on the wrist.

Not needed. I sold off all of my winders years ago.

Just a matter of convenience. I have one, and like it to keep my 2 Subs up and running so I can grab and go.

You don't need one. If you haven't worn the mechanical timepiece in a month, i'd suggest simply a monthly working/winding on the movement.

You certainly don't NEED to use one, but I love mine for the convenience of it. If you switch back and forth every few days you will appreciate a winder. I typically wear my dress watch Mon-Thurs and my sport watch Fri-Mon so I find the winder to be very useful.

If you're storing a watch just wind it twice a month (this is an AD recommendation) to preserve the life of the oils. No need for a winder.

If winders were necessary to keep the watch working properly then every watch in every display case in every boutique would be on one.

The fact that they're not should tell you everything you need to know, and some watches sit in the case for years before being bought.

Its a convenience, nothing more.

if you get one get a good one. cheap watch winders overwork the movements, as they were never meant to just continuously wind 24 hours a day. They end up damaging the watch.

I don't use one as I'm more of a one at at time for two weeks, then another...

I have two watches in rotation at any one time. At night both are in the winder and in the morning I choose one. Sometimes I an go weeks just wearing one watch or wear one just at the weekend.

The winder was a present and I am glad I have it, if I want to change watch I am not faffing about setting the GMT hand or date etc, which to me is a PITA.

I say get one.

Utter tosh, mine runs for about 90 seconds each hour and nothing more.

This.

If you are planning on storing the new GMT, then you don't need to put it on a winder. It might be hard to get a winder and power to it if you are going to keep it in a safe anyway. I would just take it out and wind it up every few weeks to keep it going. I have a Speedmaster Professional that I am storing for about 8 years before giving to my son when he graduates high school that I take out and wind every once in a while.

I also have the same 2002 GMT Master II black that is my son's birth year watch. I will likely give that one to him when he graduates from college (or hopefully medical school, haha).

Yes they are a matter of convenience. For some watches that convenience is almost essential. An 1803 DD for example is a major effort to adjust both Day and Date on. I require it be on a winder when not in use or I wouldn't use it.

Amen! At least once a week. Sometimes more.
I think it is fair to say there is no consensus.
There are knowledgable TRF members who fall on both sides of this question.

I concur. That said, I have three quad winders on which I keep a dozen automatics. All of my watches have one or more complications and I like to keep them running so I can grab and go, even though I rotate watches on a daily basis.

Peter (Padi56) and I have diametrically opposite views on the value of winders, but that hasn't stopped us from being friends.

Do you need one? No. You can wind and set the watch whenever you want to wear it.

The question would be, would you be willing to pay for the convenience of not having to do so every time you want to change it up?

Paid and I also have opposite views although he has realistically softened his stance to agree that it's useful on complications. Yes it does put additional wear and tear on the watch as its not lying idle but for the convenience it's well worth it in my case.

Thanks everyone, I think as it doesn't harm the watch not running and the fact it will be 'in storage' I think I will skip the winder. The money can go to another watch!!!
