Purchase the watch, and when you get to Switzerland, send the box back to your home address. Wear the watch back through customs.

What happens if you are a UK citizen on an American cruise ship and buy, say, an Omega seamaster in international waters?

This is interesting stuff however I think there should be an obligation on watches of Switzerland at Heathrow to explain this to buyers. A simple "are you a uk resident?" Yes/no here is the situation.

Absolutely nothing....but you're still meant to declare it when you return home to U.K.

I wouldn't worry about the previous purchase. You could have purchased these items as gifts to friends in the country you were visiting. There is no proof that you brought them back. In regards to buying a Rolex from Heathrow, I would ask the Rolex boutique salesman if they will pass the info to the UK customs. I know that the receipt will have your passport #, Flight # and your nationality. Good luck and keep us posted ;)
