So when does a Rolex become a vintage Rolex?
Was wondering if my Explorer II 16570 is now considered "vintage", being five digit?
Not that it really matters one way or the other beyond I've owned mine since new, which begs the question if my Explorer II is now considered "vintage" what does that say about me? Oh my... |

"It is not old, it is vintage."
Being 'old' is the first prerequisite for becoming 'vintage'.

general rule of thumb for 'vintage' is that it has to be over 20 years old

Ask enough people and you'll get a variety of answers ... For me it's got to have plexi to be considered vintage

20+ years old, and the collecting community has to see it as iconic. There are plenty of "old" Rolexes that are not vintage. Not every wine can be a '61 Chateau Margaux or an '82 Chateau Becheville.

There are differing opinions, and none is absolutely correct. There is usually an exception to any example, and no official arbiter.

Vintage? Usually it becomes valuable after I sell it.

So when does a Rolex become a vintage Rolex? - Generally speaking it becomes vintage when the owner of an ordinary watch wants to sell it at an inflated price.

I view my Coke 16760 from 1987 as vintage. 30 years old. Just my opinion.

Pre 1988 watches with plexi crystals IMHO thats vintage anything with a cal 31 series movement perhaps in 20 years time.

Padi
I presume your wife was born before 1988. Try telling her that she, in your opinion, is now vintage and then please tell us how she reacted. I have a 1981 Freccione 1655 with a plexi and it looks quite modern. I certainly would not call it vintage. It is a total misuse of the word. Possibly "classic" would be more appropriate. Whenever you want it to be vintage.
I consider anything with old "T" dials is becoming vintage at this point |

I have a 16660 SD 8.3 serial. It's been serviced with new dial, bezel, crystal. It looks like it's almost new. I'd say just got by age and originality of the watch.

Thought it was like cars 25 years or older.
