Rolex servicing

Hi,
I have an antique Rolex automatic which needs servicing as the movement has slowed down.
Any contacts for this servicing? As I reside in Bandung,would need a Bandung servicing point.

How old is your Rolex and what reference? You might need to go to the RSC in Jakarta, although many of us here get nervous about having RSCs service our vintage Rolexes. Just not sure you'll have many options in Bandung.

Why the issue with having a RSC service vintage rolex's. Are they inclined to replace hands, dials etc? Im in Jakarta.

Short answer – yes

Long answer - it’s more economical for Rolex to consider replacing hands and dial to “re-lume” rather than do it by hand. This also fore-stalls any defects that may be showing (lume degradation on a Submariner for instance), as this degradation may find its way into the movement at a later date.

By simply replacing these parts, they not only get it looking like new (they have a reputation to protect after all), it’s less work for Rolex, simplifies things – and besides, you’re paying for the parts anyway, so why not ?

The down side for the owner is incorrect markings on the bottom of the dial, patinas that don’t match, and a 50 year old watch with a high polish. This matters on some watches more than others, and they “should” ask you first – but what are you going to do if they simply call you and say your watch is ready having already just gone ahead and done the lot ?

Depends on the customer – the watch – and the service centre.

By going independent, you have more control over a lot of this – your watch, your money – your choice …..

I've been working with the RSC in Kathmandu. It was possible to sit down with a very skilled watchmaker, and review all the decisions in person regarding polishing or not, which parts to replace and which ones to keep. Overall, we decided on replacing any parts that don't show, while not doing any refinishing or changes to parts that do. This way I end up with a highly reliable watch that preserves the vintage 1972 appearance and value.
