A "cheap" watch winder can ruin your watch. So stay away from the bargain aisle.

I have Orbita, Wolf & Scatola winders and have been delighted by their performance and durability.

Scatola is more expensive... and may not be worth the premium.... but from time to time some of the Scatolas can be purchased for about the same as a Wolf or an Orbita You just have to look carefully and patiently. That said, you'll not be unhappy with a Wolf or an Orbita.

How exactly does a cheap watch winder ruin a watch?

I have a watch winder from Brookstone (considered cheap at $300) and has been winding my SubC & IWC Mark XVIII watches for 2 years now.

I don't use watch winders to keep my watches accurate, more so to keep the oils and movements moving at 650 TPD.

If the watch is not properly shielded from the motor it can become magnitized.

I think cheap means in the $50 ballpark. Yep I had a $50 winder mess up a Hamilton. Not enough shielding I was told.

I see... my SubC is running 1 sec / day slow, so I'm guessing my brooks tone is shielded :).

Thanks for the note tho.

Cheers, Lami

Are Brookstone any good, I don't want a piece of furniture which will be stored in my safe with the watches, and cost me thousands of $$...

No Rolex watch needs a machine winder complete waste of money especially if you have full use of your fingers and wrists.

I use a WOLF 270002 Heritage Single Watch Winder. Don't use it too much with my Sub (Although it works great with it), but I have a Nice Seiko Automatic that you can't manually wind and it keeps it nicely wound when not wearing. It's also dead-silent and runs on batteries or AC. Amazon has it for $167.99. They also have a double winder Heritage Model as well.
