To all the brave allies that risked their lives on those beaches so that we may spend our weekends at the beach, I say, "Thank you very much from a proud American."

I was able to tour Normandy several years ago, and can't imagine what those guys went through. Pointe du Hoc was particularly moving.

WWII was a no-compromise endeavor.
There was no substitute for victory and any concern about offending the sensibilities of the enemy was non-existent. There are lessons to be learned from the strategies of WWII, but alas, I do believe that it may be too late. I hope it is not too late, but the mindset to achieve unconditional surrender of our enemies seems to have faded from Western thought long ago. That is the lesson to be learned not only from those who stormed the beaches and flew the aerial missions , but aslo from that generation who fought WWI and who masterminded the victories in Europe and the Pacific and of course the home front during WWII.
