Thoughts on a single winder for your Rolex?

I'm looking to buy a single winder, since I have 2 Rolexes. One is usually on the wrist, but i'd like the other to be ready to go when I switch it up.

I'm looking at Barrington winders at the moment, they seem nice quality without being insanely expensive. The features are also pretty good, and you can link multiple winders together if your collection grows in the future.

This is the one I'm looking at: https://www.watchreviewblog.com/barr...winder-review/

Anybody have any recommendations?

Don't do it. After having several, my conclusion is they're bad for the watches ultimately.

Repetitive, identical motions such as winders cause not good for bracelet stretch and they produced a weird scratch pattern on my caseback.

How does the bracelet move when its in the winder? I thought bracelet stretch was caused from the links rubbing together.

All Rolex automatic movements wind in both directions.
For any non perpetual calendar watch, a watch winder is totally unnecessary.
If you have a choice of watches and do not wear it every day, it is not real chore to reset it and wind it by hand.If you don't wear it every day you also reduce wear to the movement components, why waste that benefit by having it wound when it is not required to tell the time on the wrist.?

Yes very interesting. I just like the thought of being able to quickly swap watches on the go without having to wind them. But yes you're right I guess its kind of unnecisary if you don't have a calendar watch.

Padi converted me ultimately. I found that there are micromovements from slipping around on the watch holder pad when the watch is in the winder which add up over time. Small, but repetitive stress type thing.

Nothing wrong with winders for convenience. Some of us don't mind winding and setting a watch when we change, others do enjoy just putting it on and going.

Normally Wolf and Orbita seem to be the most durable in the US. Sorry, I do not know much about Barrington winders. I understand that they are well known UK products and so should be comparable.

While I agree that winders are generally not needed for anything less than an AC or PC, it's really more personally preference for those who enjoy the convenience. I think some have a tendency to over vilify these devices.

My personal view is that while unecesary, a quality winder will neither destroy nor prematurely age your watch.

Opinions are like belly buttons...

I won't get into the debate of the good or bad of winders but will answer your question. A single watch winder, No.

If you feel the need to get one, at least get a double. What happens if one day you decide not to wear a watch? What happens if you acquire a third watch?

I'd look at Wolf. https://www.wolf1834.com/category/do...nders/filter:/

With Wolf, you could also go with the cube module and add as you go.

By the way, the WatchPod travel case they show with the winder you posted looks pretty nice.

Good Luck.

The Wolf looks very nice.

And yes maybe I should keep it simple and buy one of those WatchPods! At least i don't have to worry about damaging the watch like some people are saying can happen with a winder.

To counter the no watch winder camp, if a watch isn't worn for, let's say a few years, wouldn't the oils and seals dry up?

I personally will not go with a winder once I get my first Sub C at this time, but I will most likely acquire more down the road. :)

Lots of naysayers.

I keep my GMT on a winder for grabs and go when I want it. The others are in the safe and need to be wound and set.

My wife's is always on a winder when not being worn. I don't think she knows how to wind and set it.

I have a 3 watch Wolf winder.

I have a Landmark single winder that I use with my DJ. http://www.watchwinderstore.com/watc...belair-abn.htm. In retrospect, I wish I had gotten a double as I have 2 automatic watches a DJ and Tudor BBB, and depending on how much time I give my Grand Seiko quartz, I have to let one run down (the BBB, as it doesn't have a date). Landmark does have one, two or four place winders, good prices, nicely finished wooden box, place for two additional non wound watches, good easy to work single control dial.
