Watch stops ticking/oscillating weight issue?
Hi peoples,
Ever since I took my Panerai 104 into the AD, it has stopped ticking every now and then. It had been sitting in the safe for about a week, which would have used up all of its reserve power, so I'm thinking it would have to have something to do with that. When the watch stops ticking, I give it a shake, and it goes fine for a little while, but then it will stop again. So, I've tried winding it, and that will work for quite a while, but then it will stop again, maybe a day later. I'm actually thinking there may be an issue with the oscillating weight. It doesn't feel the same way that it used to - actually, I can't feel it at all unless I give the watch a gentle shake! And then, it sounds...loose. Has anyone had this issue before? I'm thinking I might just have real bad luck. EDIT: Argh, this watch is plagued with problems! So much for the anti-shock device. Beautiful watch, but this is a big letdown. EDIT #2: Could it be that the oscillating weight is not moving because I've wound the watch? Just want to to clarify that before I contact the AD. EDIT #3: I think I've just got a bad watch on my hands here. Combining this with the lug hole issue - just my luck! I've emailed the AD asking for a replacement, or a refund for an exchange. I'm thinking the most likely outcome is that they will send it in for inspection, which will leave me without it for weeks. :( Last edited by skeen; 12 September 2008 at 07:08 PM.. Reason: clarity |

104 power reserve
is only 42 hours, for most people it will take 12 or more hours of wearing to reach full reserve. Try wearing the watch and see what happens instead of "shaking it a few times" If you aren't planning on wearing it daily and don't want to set it buy a winder.

I wear it all day. From 8am, to up to 8pm, or maybe longer. The issue is, I actually can't feel the weight's movement anymore. At least on this model, the movement is very active - you're very aware that it's there. At some point it must have become dislodged.

You did the right thing by taking it to an AD. Hope everything works out well with you and that your watch is not gone too long.

Thanks. :) This might be a blessing in disguise really - perhaps they'll regulate it too? I think any special attention given to an individual watch is probably a benefit. But I'm sure not looking forward to being without it!

It's been taken to the AD. They've marked it as "top priority", and say I should get it back within a max of 4 weeks. I'm officially without it! :(

Just got a call from the AD, saying the watch is back! So it's been away just 3 weeks - not bad! Can't wait to get it back on my wrist, and hope they fixed up it right nice!

So, perhaps I'll have some before and after shots of my scratched up watch! And will certainly be taking better care of it from now on. |

When did you get back your watch? If not too long ago, I think you can ask them what was the problem and what did they do. I think they are obliged to tell you. At least you know the previous problem and make sure you monitor your watch and it does not happen again.
And IF the SAME problem happens again, touch wood, you better demand for a replacement. JMHO. |
