Love the Explorer model. Thought that the 214270 would be an ideal purchase but tried one on at an AD over the weekend and size wise was okay but it was just too heavy. So now am focusing on the 36MMer 114270. Can anyone help me figure out if there a significant difference in weight between them and more importantly are there any ideas for how to try one on in NJ before commitment of the capital?

The 39mm version being so much more "chunky", there is a difference in weight...not that the 214270 is heavy based on what I recall from the few minutes I had it on. The 114270 does seem lighter on my wrist compared to other watches in my collection.

If you really want to get a feel for it on your wrist prior to purchase, find a trusted seller in your region who you can meet face to face...or go to an AD and try on a 36mm DJ. It will feel more or less the same on the wrist.

Unfortunately trying on a new style 36mm Datejust at an AD will not give the OP a feel of how weighty the 114270 is. The major weight difference between the 114270 & 214270 is not due to the 2 mm increase in watch head size, but rather the newer style Oyster bracelet and easylink Oyster clasp. The 114270 has a stamped steel clasp which weights substantially less.

OP the only way to tell how the 114270 will feel is to try it on. If you feel the 214270 is heavy than chances are the 114270 is not that much lighter.

Buy from a trusted seller who has a 3-day, no-questions-asked return policy. There are several that sell on this site. That's one way to check out the 36mm Explorer.

You might need to pay return shipping if you end up not liking the watch, but that's just a small fee to pay to try out the classic size of this great reference. Good luck!

I would say that weight wise, you'll probably get used to it within a day or so of wearing it. I can't see the 36mm being that much lighter.

I think you'll love the 36mm 114270. I enjoy the larger Rolex watches but always come back to the smaller ones for comfort and understated good looks. If you haven't tried a 14060M or 114270, I highly recommend it, especially if your wrist is under 7".

The 36 mm Explorer is a terrific watch. I wear my SubC slightly more often, but enjoy switching between them. 36 is a great size and there's a reason it's a classic. Very comfortable and understated.

I'm wearing my 114270 now--just picked it up at the bank about three hours ago.

I have no idea what it weighs, but I can tell you that it is no lightweight, given its small size, yet it is not so heavy that it is not comfortable to wear.

After wearing my larger watches, it's always good to come back to my 114270 or my 116200 for a nice break.

The Explorer was my first Rolex and I just cannot explain the feeling I get each time I put it on. As much as I like all my watches, the 114270 has a special place in my heart.

While I wouldn't call either of them heavy watches, the 114270 is noticeably lighter than the 214270, primarily due to the updated bracelet with solid center links and modern clasp on the 214270. The extra weight attributable to the slightly larger case size is negligible. I suspect you'll love the 114270...it's an awesome watch and a true classic.

Agreed. I own one and love it. The bracelet (hollow links) is much lighter than the 39 mm version, which makes the watch substantially lighter.

I believe the 214270 is around 126g, and the 114270 is around 100g. Enough of a difference to notice the weight difference on the wrist!

I don't know of any trusted sellers that frequent these forums who is from NJ. My advice would be to find someone from NYC and drive there to meet them. OR (as others have suggested) speak to a trusted seller beforehand and ask them if you can return the watch if it doesn't work for you. Most of them do have a 3-5 day return period and you'd only be out shipping charges.

Personally, I'd just buy it. It's hard to imagine you won't like it.

What is your wrist size? If it's 6.75" or less, just buy a 114270 from one of the well known sellers!

There are quite a few stores in NYC that sell second hand Rolex. Try calling around and find one in stock to try on in person.

Interesting post. My good lady has a 39mm exp she bought new in 2014, I take it then the new one with the longer hands is heavier? She wanted a Millgauss and has slim wrists, when she tries it on it was too deep then she saw explorer and loved it!! She doesn't think it too heavy at all but perhaps the latest explorer is heavier? 36mm DJ is a nice watch but I would urge you to look again at the explorer it's gorgeous. Good luck with your choice and enjoy.
