Service PAM000 by Panerai or watchmaker?

I purchased a used PAM000 (Calibre OP 1) that has not been serviced since its initial purchase (nearly 6 years).

Is it worth getting this thing serviced by Panerai? Or should I save the cash and get it serviced by a competent watchmaker? Any risks in going with a competent watchmaker (such as testing for sealing and water resistance)? Finally, what are the estimated prices for getting it serviced by (a) Panerai, and (b) competent watchmaker?

1. If Watch works and keeps good time, leave alone! Opening watch has its risks
2. Good independent is 200-400
3. Panerai will be 600+

Agree , unless you are planning any swimming or water sport wearing it.
After 6 years it would be worth to change gaskets.
If you dont plan any wet escapades then just check if watch keeps right time.

I see that most people are saying for me to wait until something is wrong, but isn't it a good idea to keep the parts lubricated so that it doesn't cause unnecessary wear down the line? Or is this different since it's a "simple" ETA movement?

I'd let it ride until it get to about 8 years, unless like the gentlemen have said you plan on spending a lot of time in the water.

That 6497 movement in there can be serviced by any competent watchmaker. It's such a great, basic, robust movement that it's usually what they use to teach student watchmakers.

if you worry, have a watch maker open up the case to verify the movement, the close it back up and do a pressure test.

If the watch needs a cosmetic polish/brush Panerai would be the choice to get that and the movement done. But if you are only concerned with the movement the independent is fine. The crown seal would be my concern for moisture. Since you just got it, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to get it serviced to give you peace of mind.

For the crown gasket, are they available to independent watch maker? or you have to go through PSC in order to replace it?

I have always had my 000 serviced by my local watchmaker. It's fast and cheap...
I own the caseback opening tool, which I take along with my watches, as my watchmaker does not have one.
Do what you are comfortable with, but it is certainly a simple piece

A watchmaker without a caseback opening tool. I'd be a little reluctant to let him work on my watches.

Do you own a Panerai? Have looked at the caseback? Very unique ....he's not a Panerai AD and I wouldn't want him using on orb
