Blue 16233 Datejust for wife?

Hi All

I'm looking to buy my wife a Datejust from her birth-year as she'll be turning 30 soon. She's only had cheap watches before and I know she'd love something special.

After a bit of shopping around, it turns out it's tricky to find the right watch in 'mint' condition, with box & papers.

I can't post links yet, but Watches of Distinction have a 36mm 16233 TT, fluted bezel and blue dial. I spoke to the shop who described the watch as being in perfect condition with almost no stretch on the bracelet, this is due to being locked in a safe for most of its life. It's got everything; papers, box, original receipt and spare links. Apparently the dial is blue with a slight purple hue, the picture on their website doesn't show the colour very well but I guess it must look like this:

First of all, at £4195 do you think the price is fair? I tried to negotiate a little on the phone, but the seller wouldn't budge, assuring me that this was the cheapest I'm likely to find. Looking on Chrono24 and Watchfinder, he seems to be right.

Secondly, can I have some opinions on the watch and whether you think it would suit a ladies wrist? She's used to larger watches as she used to wear Michael Kors and such. She spotted this Tag Heuer which is 39mm, but was put off because it is quartz and wants automatic. Here's the Tag:

Since the Tag is very blue and she has another blue strapped watch, it makes me think she'll like the blue face of the Rolex. I love it, but will she?

I've left a refundable deposit to hold the watch - going to have a look on Saturday.

What do you guys and girls think?

I had thought about that, but she would be over the moon with a Rolex and is definitely not expecting it. I'd love to surprise her.

I proposed to her with a ring that I commissioned based on what I thought she'd like... and she absolutely loves it. I've been pretty successful in the past with handbags and other jewellery too.

I love the watch, but I'm just really unsure about the dial colour. I love it, but would she?

I'd be really grateful for some opinions. Guys, maybe ask your other halves too?

To my eye a TT DJ looks better with a light colored dial, white, champagne or silver.

My two cents' worth: the best 16233 combo is a white Roman dial, as shown here. Also, I'd try and avoid the a case with pin holes. The TT DJ looks so much cleaner in a no holes case.

How do I tell if the case has pin holes? Is there where the case attaches to the bracelet?

Yes, a hole in the outside of each lug.

It can make swapping the bracelet for a strap much easier. Some prefer the holes as they denote a more vintage piece. Each to their own.

I agree with this completely... If you buy a watch for £4,200 and she doesn't like it, the same seller will buy it back for 25-30% less the very next day. Also, while the birth year thing is a nice touch, more important is to find the right watch, right colour combo etc.

With a birth year watch which is around 30 years old the watch could possibly need a service so why not buy a brand new one and let her make the choice.

I've always thought the blue was a masculine watch... I agree the MoP would be a great dial for spouse. Probably with diamonds instead of romans but it's all about her tastes. I would tend to think about blue not matching outfits....
