This phenomenon is amazing. Most of these so-called dials are as light as they were when they were new. There are some people out there with more money than sense and some unscrupulous sellers who perpetuate the myth.

Yeah, this game hasn't changed and it's only gotten worse. The vintage Rolex market is the most dangerous watch game right now....especially select references....do your research people, buy the seller but you still need to do your due dilligence. Great subforum here along with good guys on VRF to help analyze watches. So make good use of it and don't make rash purchases unless you know what you're buying.

For more than 50 years I have been searching for rare and collectible vintage
Rolex watches - especially those with rare dials, box and papers etc.
...and ...I have found nothing.!!....Yet in the past few years.. I see on a weekly
basis vintage Rolex watches with box and papers, fancy dials, fancy colored inserts etc.
...It must be that the Rolex heavens have opened and it's now "raining" collectible watches.

And moving onto GMT, how do we get yellow patina on dial (i.e. been in safe for years) and faded pink/grey/blue bezel (i.e. been worn everyday from new)?
What surprises me more is that even some big names sell these 'untruths'!

Reminds me of the Ovettone.
When I started, it only referred to the gold Datejust, with coin edge bezel and extended case between the lugs.
I.e. the reference 6105.
Now every large or mid sized bubble back is called an Ovettone.
Quite irritating.

Kind of like a couple here that sell watches with damaged dials as “tropical”. And like the “spider” dials. It’s damaged or defective. But I guess putting that in a FS ad is not attractive.

Really, who would that be?

Faded inserts are not uncommon, but the fuchsias, orange or pinks aren't that common on vintage inserts. Artificially aged inserts are fairly easy to identify if you know what to look for.

If a watch is put away, surely the bezel would remain unfaded if original to the watch?

As far as 'untruths' I'm talking generally online. Thank goodness for guys like you.When you list your watches, the descriptions are exact, to the point and without myth. The beautiful watches do the talking.

I have only ever seen one it was being worn by the original owner , we compared watches I had a Black Dial 116520 on at the time, he said that the damage was done when he left it on a table while in South Africa but was hoping RSC would exchange it at its next service , firmly believed it has caused by heat and light ,

I had no reason to doubt his explanation, I expect it was swapped out at service as well ,

The one I see had gone almost copper in colour on the sub dial rings , Guess now someone would offer him strong money but this was five years ago and the owner really disliked it
