Otherwise, read up on the region/varietal from knowledgeable consumers and reviewers, figure out what's mentioned frequently as having good QPR (quality to price ratio), and see if your palate agrees. If so, then invest in some higher priced bottles, as well as older examples, and see if your appreciation grows.

Well...for me, it started from living in Europe for a while, which happened to be when I first got into wine many years ago. A mentor of mine (who happened to be a collector) started my wine education with Burgundy and Bordeaux (of course ) — and it just took off from there. I am a BIG California fan as well — but like others appreciate all varietals and regions (some more or less than others).

The best way to learn (in my opinion) is to taste, and continue to taste. Educate your palate, determine out what you like and dislike. Also (as mentioned) read about the regions, styles, etc. It can help you pinpoint areas you might be interested in. This just takes time and venturing out a little.

Thanks for the advice. I am tasting as much as I can and I like to maximize my QPR! I understand that it takes time, which it okay as drinking wine is a wonderful way to pass time.

I love Stagecoach fruit, I was a big big fan of Miner Family Wines for many years until Gary Brookman started to channel his inner Tim Mondavi and screw the whole thing up by changing the wines style to more European and age-worthy hollowness. Crying shame, their wines used to be real treasures!! Anyway hope this one reflect Stagecoach well, it's an under rated AVA IMHO!

fusionstorm & Roger have given you some great advice I would only add that you should seek out wine dinners also. One great way to get knowledge of and experience with European and Old World wines is to pair them up with food. Often you will see library offerings (older vintages) with wine dinners as well which will expose you to the concept of aging certain wines and how they evolve. It's really a great way to get exposed to the culture of wine and it's various expressions. Often it's the least assuming wine on the list during a dinner that surprises you the most and it's why if you have the time to attend a few dinners you will learn a ton and can get the best education bang for your buck IMHO. Check local restaurants and wine retailers as they often pair up for these events.

This one was spectacular for sure - wish I had a TON more of it!! This one is (to me) a true representation of how truly great Stagecoach fruit can be - and at the original price point - and even what you can find it for now is a steal.

(I agree on the Miner front — they most definitely used to be so much better)

My favorite vineyard in the world. I know some of y'all might turn your nose up at a Georgia wine, but this vineyard is the most awarded North American vineyard not in Napa. (true statement)

Seriously this stuff is delicious. I will put it up against anything from Napa/Sonoma that is under $150.

Met Keith Hugh at the dog park the other day from Hugh Family Vineyards, seemed like a nice guy. Gave me some good spots for my next visit to wine country.
Anyone know him or the vineyard?
He said they only produce 1,200 cases per year.
I can’t recall ever seeing it out in stores/restaurants

The Bordeaux was still quite good. Tasting notes online said it should have been consumed by 07, but still plenty of dark cherry and currant with a medium body.

The Fritz was excellent. Still a deep red, med-full body, light tannins, and great dark red fruit with a little spice.

Looking GOOD my friend!!! No wrong choices there- that’s for sure— and a cpl STELLAR vintages as well. That 04 and 07 are AMAZING — and are two of my go to’s for sure.

The 11 is one of those wines that show when you have an amazing wine and winemaker - an ‘off’ vintage can be just as good in quality as some others.

I’ll never forget introducing a good friend of mine to Colgin - and when we were done with the bottle — he asked for a straw...hahha!!

Tonight's adventure, second dab into a bourdoux style wine. Was great but I think I still prefer the cab next to it. (Brought our own bottles tonight)
