3 Guys riddle

Three men went into a motel. The clerk said the room was $30, so each man paid $10 and went into the room.
Later, the clerk realized that the room was only $25, so he sent the bellboy to their room with $5.
On the way, the bellboy could not figure out how to split the $5 evenly among the 3 men.
So, he gave each man $1 and kept the remaining $2 for himself.

This meant that the 3 men each paid $9 for the room, which is a total of $27.
Add the $2 that the bellboy kept = $29.

Where is the other dollar?

well you canot add the- 3 X $9 and the $2 as they are not part of the same calcualtion. you are using to different sets of figures

So $25 + 3x$1= $28 + the $2= £30 or

It should be $27 less the $2 =$25 the new price. you cannot add these figures to get the original price, as it no longer exists

You are correct Chris! Some people stumble over this for a while before they realize it doesn't add up. 2 different figures...

I had 30 dollars in my 401(k) yesterday and sold it today and received 25 dollars without any commissions. Since the shares I purchased were not part of an original issuance (i.e. I was not the first owner and thus purchased from another entity); who gets the benefit of the lost 5 in value?
