As a holidays are fast approaching and the year is almost ending.

I’m finding myself blessed with everything I ever wanted my wife, and my two sons my Rolex collection and everything material possession that I can dream of.

I feel a need to do a few good deeds not sure how? either by helping somebody less fortunate than me ? I’m just wondering what examples do you guys do during the holidays to help out someone less fortunate than yourselves.

We buy scarfs, socks, gloves, toques and a few non perishables ( granola bars etc), make up some large zip lock bags with these.
Then, when we are shopping downtown, my daughter will hand them out to the street people.
Things you take for granted mean a lot to those without.
Just one of the things we do.

Interesting question.

We have somewhat of a dynamic planning process for my son's Cub Scout Pack (I'm the Cubmaster), and revisited this topic about a month ago. We've done food baskets in the past, and will again this year.

But we're also told that the proverbial "singing" that groups do for shut-ins makes for somewhat of a "boom and bust" (as my Papa used to say) around the signature holidays. So we plan to make our visits during the non-Christmas, et cetera, times; to sing, do skits, play games, et cetera.

I work through my Masonic Lodges in my district to assemble food baskets and deliver them to needy families. My Lodge has also adopted a needy family and takes them out Christmas shopping for the kids.

Thanks for the reminder. Last year, the kids were too young to do anything profound with them. In years past we used to do the holiday christmas tree wish list thing.

I organize the annual Easter Seals Regatta at our yacht club. In the 3 years we've done it we've raised close to $100K for equipment for kids with disabilities in our area. A few shots from our last event, including the buzz cuts.

Some good things here....nice to see on a forum based around material goods.

I give to charity...one of those dumb monthly debit things and I also do my bit for local charities.

I once provided some short "campfire" ghost stories for a group that took underprivelleged kids on camping trips...that cost me nothing but it felt nice doing it.

As a company each year we do not send Christmas cards to each other or buy daft presents for our colleagues...instead we pool the money (plus a little extra) and buy gifts for a local children's home.

I should do more...thanks for reminding me of this!

what no recycling in your area, or is it because all the farmyard animals that live in your Norfolk homes eat all the food waste?

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr it aint like that here....well it is kind of.

We have recycling...I do the usual 3 bins stuff but I don't do enough...Although I do sponsor a dolphin and a Killer Whale on behalf of my nieces!

We take toys to the battered women's shelter so that some of the kids can have something brand new for Christmas.

I fill out shoeboxes with things like toothpaste/brushes, gloves, socks, toys and books (for the kids) and bus tickets through school. Also bring in nonperishables, and more gloves socks.
Last year I wanted to volunteer at the Drop-In Centre here, but I applied too late. I'll do it earlier this year! There is also a program where there is a list of homeless people who registered who wrote down what they wish for Christmas, and you can give it to them. Some people put down ridiculous things like a "black '08 Mustang," but mostly they put things like greyhound tickets to specific places so they can see their families, transit tickets to get to their jobs, things like that. It's a great program.
