Isn’t that an awfully long way to run for just one beer, though?

All the credit in the world to you, especially a trail UM. 5ks get me near death so I couldn't imagine that kind of mileage.

Nice! Any idea when you're going to run it? If all goes well it would be 2020 for me. Might be cool to meet up.

Then focus on qualifying for the full UTMB

Your hikes are getting quite long as well, and I believe you said you did a little bit of running as well? You being active is all that matters, keep it up my friend

I'd rather run than sit in traffic

Your legs just get numb after 40km, and it's like going on autopilot, very weird. With some extra training I think I can go much further.
Mind you, running a very fast 5km kicks my butt too!

Nice one! Well done. I used to be an obsessive runner, starting with ultras and then moved to shorter distances to improve my speed. I can strongly recommend checking out two ultras in South Africa...

The Comrades (89km) and the Two Oceans, which is 56 km and run around Cape Town with the most spectacular views. I have done both of these and other ultras. Keep it up, its worth it, like a long term investment in health.

Man, more mileage you must have broken the mental wall. That's my biggest issue and it causes my times to fluctuate so much. Last 5k season I was anywhere from 17:56 up to 20:34. I thought I was done this winter but my treadmill practices runs have been getting back to the level they should be.

I play hockey 3 days a week so that kills a lot of my leg stamina by Saturday for race days. I debated focusing on just running but I can't give up hockey yet.

Good luck in all your future races. Your inspiring me to keep grinding that pavement.

All I can hear in my head is this now

Thank you for the tip, never been to South Africa, would be cool to explore the world with ultra running.

There is something that draws me to that discomfort, making your mind stronger, to just keep on pushing. You know, if you quit it will haunt you for a long time, but the pain you endured will be forgotten in a day or two. Never worth quitting, unless you're injured or have something serious going on of course (dehydration, overheating, heart problems).

Keep on hammring man!

Congrats Bas. That's a great accomplishment. Well done.

I was afraid to even open the thread when I read Ultramarathon as I thought it might be too much for me

I had never heard of such a thing.

Bas' Quote - "I'm not a good swimmer, I can swim and that is basically it. No way I'm doing Iron Man". chuckle:

In younger, thinner days I did a 1/2 Tri w/a woman they let wear a life jacket. She was a gifted athlete but couldn't swim to save her soul...smaller town so she knew organizer. It was fun to watch her bobb up & down then crush everybody on the rest of the course.
