Why Rolex Is A Good Ski Watch This Winter...

Well, a Rolex is a good ski watch any winter...

........But there is a reason too...........

That same famous water resistance is important.

As you go up and down in altitude skiing the mountains, the pressure in your watch changes...couple that with keeping it under your gloves or sweater, when you take a look at it at the top of the hill, when you enter the lodge, or hit the resort fireplace bar - you're asking for a lesser watch to fog up and condense inside.......It'll happen to your camera too, but it can ruin a lesser watch......

Rolex, the perfect ski watch...........

Since the watch is airtight the pressure inside the case stays the same. As you go up in altitude pressure reduces at a normal laspe rate of 1 inch per 1,000 foot. Thus, the gas inside the case will then expand. If the seals then fail gas will leak out and colder air will replace the air that has been kept warmer than the outside air by the body's heat. But, during this transfer the warm air this is being released will reach it's ability to hold moisture due to the rapid decrease in temp and condensation will form. Am I close. What do I know. Time for a few more beers.

Yes Joe, you're right...The inside pressure of the watch only changes in relation to the outside pressure; it really stays the same, but the pressure at the top and the bottom if the mountain is different..

So..........Don't spill warm beer on a cold watch after skiing..........

What you got me think'en was how condensation would build up in a Rolex if the seals failed at 10,000msl. I had an explosive decompression once and after landing I noticed a lot of mositure. You made me think. Now I will blame you for the headache.

I was in an aircraft once and there was condensation.

So I guess it is not a good idea to unwind the crown to change the time or otherwise tamper with your watch while you are other than at ground level :

I agree as I ski in Vermont a LOT. My GMT can handle the abuse of course, BUT I have to remind myself to keep it UNDER my jacket! The cold causes the watch to suck ALL the heat out of my wrist when the temps. drop.

Just a little thought to keep in mind!

All good points! And appropriate for this time of year in Alaska. I recognized that photo right away.

I guess I'll leave the Suunto at home this year when I venture down to Girdwood.
