GMT II with 3186 vs 3185

Hi

Quick questions came to mind as I was reading another post regarding the "New High of the 3186". I don't get it, but it is what it is.

https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=590619

1. Do the Rolex movements have serial numbers/codes/markings on them?

2. What's to stop an unscrupulous person with a late Z or early M series 16710 with a 3185 and swap it out with a 3186 from a 116710?

Thanks

Movements are numbered, if you would do a switch and RSC is paying good attention to the numbers if it ever comes in then you might be in for some trouble.

Thanks for the quick reply.

How would one check to see if the movement and the case serial numbers match?

Thanks.

The movement ID and the case ID don't match on the watch but Rolex have records of which movement went into the case.

As you said the 3186 movements were installed in the old GMT models from around mid Z to the end of the M run if the case was outside of that range it would be suspect.

Chances of finding a case in that range with a 3185 would be slight and then you would need a 116710 and then, and then.
