A good entry to red wine is port. It is a dessert wine but has a lot of the characteristics that red wine will have; just no tannins and more sweetness.
I like to drink it with a nice bar of bitter dark chocolate. If you get to like this try some fruity, rich, "lush," Zinfandels. They will be sweet, but the right ones will have little tannin so you can get into heavier reds that way. Zins are great grilling wines that hold up well to BBQ, steaks, burgers, and even some of the heartier pasta dishes.
