Sixteenth edition of the "VERSUS" post/picture. What is "VERSUS"? Well, I thought it would be fun to compare two watches (and only those two watches) and discuss pros/cons by outlining the differences and getting folks' ideas/thoughts/opinions on TRF. We got folks here that have been collecting and studying these things for decades and those who are just starting to venture into the crazy world of Rolex (and everyone in between). Therefore, it would be fun and educational!

For this edition, we have a showdown of a couple Submariners with dates. A Submariner reference 1680 and a reference 16800.

Which do you prefer and why?

Because of the practicality of sapphire, I could maybe see going that direction if this was a matte dial 16800, but, in this case, 1680 all the way...actually, I'd still go 1680 in either case. The subtle differences make a difference, like the more compact bezel profile and whatnot.

My god that 1680 is glorious. The dial makes the difference for me here.

That's a great 1680, all the way for me. Anything with white gold is not my cup of tea.

The 1680. The bezel is fabulous with the more pronounced indentions. The larger lume plots really pop. And I like the dial font for the Rolex logo and how it's closer to the center post. All in all looks much better.

Yes, you'll some bezels have been polished heavily which leads to the "teeth" being soft/rounded down...but this bezel is nice and sharp, :)

If it was matte I'd go 16800, but in this case 1680.

Can we get Versus photos comparing the side profiles which show off the unique top hat crystal of the 1680? This reason, along with those mentioned above, is why I chose the 1680 over any 16800.

Well I made my choice with the matte dial 16800, it’s my one watch. The 1680s look fabulous but some 16800s have deeper patina which I prefer (I don’t know why this happens as 1680s are older). 16800s are also thinner and okay to swim with without much worry. The top hat acrylic has its own charm though :)
