Problem with the hour hand of my GMT Master II

Hi everybody, first of all I wan't to thank you for this nice forum. It's great to have a possibility to ask questions around Rolex watches.

I've a 6 years old Rolex GMT Master II in Steel/Gold. I wear it from time to time. Maybe 3-4 Times a Week. When I exercise in the gym, I put it off.

4 days ago i discovered that the hour hand is not moving, or moving to slow. First i thought it was because it wasn't on my wrist for 1 day. than i manually adjusted it. after 4 hours again. then i discovered that there is no typical sound of the hour hand. it was too easy to adjust. there is no resistance.

Now i read in another forum that this could be a very small clip broken.

1st question:
Did you ever heard about this problem?

2nd question:
As this is my first Rolex, I've no experience where to go!?
I bought this watch in Munich (Germany) and I live in Vienna (Austria). So I would not like to repair it in Munich.

3rd question:
How much could they charge me? I've absolutely no idea. Is it 100€, 500€ or 1000€?

Thank you in advance!

Welcome to the forum!

1. Yes
2. Vienna will work
3. Cost depends on the actual issue

Could be a number of problems; I would contact a good watchmaker that will let you "watch" as he diagnoses the issue...

He needs to open the case back, and remove the movement.

First thing to check is whether the hour hand is tight on the shaft (easy fix if isn't)...

If tight, then he will need to look deeper into the movement itself...

Good luck!

I had this problem with my SS GMT IIc after five years.

I was adjusting the time with the hour hand and it went click and the hour hand moved freely, no define clicking like it should. The hour hand stopped completely with the second and minute hands continued to work.

I took it to my AD where I bought the watch and explained as to what had happened and that I did not expect this would to happen to a Rolex watch. It was sent back to the RSC in the UK and was repaired free of charge even though it was outside the warranty. However in the UK there is consumer protection.

Apparently I read in forums that this was common fault with the GMT II movement.

Same Issue

HI, I just had the same problem with my almost 6 years old GMT Master 2, its still with the dealer for repair and the estimate was approximately 200 $. honestly, I'm not happy at all that this happens to a Rolex in such a short time specially with my careful usage.

Common problem with the 3186 movement. Rolex oftentimes repairs that problem out of warranty at no charge because they know it's such a common problem.

Did Rolex upgrade the click spring at some year? Since they knew its a problem I couldnt imagine they didnt address this issue some years back already right? The 3186 is an old movement now.

I think it’s around 2014 that Rolex started replacing the click spring with a new design when 3186 movement were sent to RSC for services. Some members reported that RSC will replace the click spring for free if the watch does not need services.

Since your watch is 6 years old it will be very unlikely to get repaired under warranty.

This is the comparison of the old and updated spring.

In theory, a good watchmaker can do the job, if they have a parts account. However, in light of some reports that Rolex might repair the problem free of charge, even though the watch is out of warranty, I think you would be well advised to check with a Rolex Service Center first.
