Ugh... indecision

I recently made a thread about flipping a few ceramic models for a PM piece. Do I consider a SS Daytona C? I don’t know if the value is there at resale prices. I mean I can almost get a 116508 for $21k

Call me crazy, but I would rather have just about any current PM Rolex over a ceramic Daytona.

If your going to pay close to or over $20k for a SS watch - you'd be silly not to just buy a PM piece.

Also as others have mentioned once you go PM you wont even think of SS again.

PM all the way for me. But I'm a fit/feel kinda guy...nothing beats the feeling of a solid gold bracelet draped around the wrist. IMO.

once you do it, you won't go back.

I agree with the PM crowd. At the end of the day the watch will always be worth it’s weight in, whatever PM it is you buy.

The steel boom is really based on scarcity of the specific model watch (Daytona, Nautilus, etc.). PMs are costly due to material, not market demand.

I tried a 116508 and DD40 YG on at the Wynn last week and I can't shake the difference in feel vs SS

I like Rolex and I have Rolex.

But for me they are a slight step above Omega (which by the way they were considered below in the sixties). So I don't think I could ever drop 5 figures on one. They are simply not that good

They appear to be trying to hype themselves to Patek levels, without actually being Patek. Good luck to them, but I will only consider non-hyped SS models. I get the appeal of a WG that only I know is a bit special, but not at the gold mark-up they have now.

If patek had something in the ~35k range that interested me at all I'd consider one.

The DaytonaC is certainly nice, but the grey market mark-up is hefty, so I'd be inclined to go for a gently pre-owned WG Smurf or BLRO. I think I'd be happy to rotate through both SS and PM if I had both in my collection. Cheers!

It's crazy time for SS, just thinking someone could flip a new Daytona or SS GMT and get the same in PM for a few K more. I know l would.

With respect, this is very much not true. The cost of the raw gold or platinum does not come close to the price premium over stainless. In fact, right now gold is significantly more expensive than platinum and yet platinum watches are priced higher than gold. Either way, the “melt value” of a PM watch isn’t going to get you close to the retail price.

More like markup. PM watches are awesome but please don’t justify them based on the value of the material

Daytona SS C is a great watch choice at retail price, not so at PM price.

I got the 500 at retail. If I had to pay 22 I’d consider the 116519 for a few k more. I’m a one watch guy so the duribilty and daily wear of gold may not work for me.

If you want a Daytona but don’t want to pay a ridiculous premium, may I recommend the 116519LN? That’s what I did. Doesn’t hurt that it looks 100x better than a 116500 (bring on the haters lol)
