My opinion is that they both have their place and their pros and cons. I'm not on one side or the other.

What people forget is that the modern Sub is still a "small" diver by today's standards. It's only big compared to the 5-digit models but compared to the sports watches of today it is actually quite conservative.

Arguably one of the top 5 most desirable watches on the market today.

And this is a serious debate??

And fwiw, I don’t have a sub. So I’ve no dog in this race.
Agreed man! They say in Australia, you have to wait year(s) just to get a basic black 116610.

Speaking of mistakes, I think it was a total mistake for me to have bought my 116610LN for a healthy discount from an AD just a few months before the start of the shortage. I feel regret every time I look at my wrist.

The horror. The horror.

Unbelievable. 6 pages about the current Sub/Case lugs and still going?

I’d rather this than a barrage of “is my sub a good investment” threads. Nothing but a healthy debate.

Your Thoughts... Will Ceramic Sub Lose Value cause of wide lugs?

Have had both 5 & 6 digit subs, & for me the 5 digit case just hits the sweet spot .

So the jewelry stores that advised you should sell your watch before it loses too much value, how much did they offer you to buy your big lug Rolex for?

What did they value it at? If the price was fair, why not flip it? As these are getting harder to find, you might have some leverage.

If you really want a 5 digit sub this might work out in your favor?

Your watch is only worth what someone is willing to pay. So move on.

There will be a day when people say “...man, I miss lugs, slim, fat, don’t care, I wish my watch had lugs”!

For all the people who bitch about maxi cases, there are those folks who love em.

Bet ya in 50 years all my maxi cased ss sports watches will have relatively the same increased value as the like models five decades ago.

I don’t see the current case as a “problem” that needs to be “corrected”....
Do we really think Rolex sees it that way?
The watch on the wrist looks fine to me...
IMO I think this whole lug thing is silly...
Don’t buy it if you don’t like it but for goodness sake try it on first...

Considering you can't find SS sport models at AD's and grey dealers are paying above MSRP for SS Subs I would say doubtful it will depreciate. Over time most SS sport models increase in value.

I love the case on my 5513. I bought a ceramic GMTII and the maxi-lugs or bigger case (whatever you call it) just felt too big. Flipped it for a current gen Explorer I and couldn’t be happier. Perfect case size, awesome blue lume. I liked the ceramic bezel and the date but the Exp1 is a perfect modern Rolex ...for me. Will value suffer as a result? Doubtful.

Sums it up well! It seems unlikely that Rolex would change something that works well, sells effortlessly and is pretty much an ongoing success. Even if they were to redesign it, the way things are going, it likely to be virtually impossible to obtain like the most recent SS watches. Why not just enjoy the one you have?

It’s a 40 mm with wider lugs. Add the maxi dial and the sublime bracelet and I’m telling you it’s tough to put on my Kermit or Polar again.
Wear what you like. The Submariners value is not going down.
My wife is rocking the Polar and won’t take it off her wrist.

Has anyone ever considered getting the lugs polished down to be more in line with the 5 digit style? Wouldn't do it personally, just curious.

It’s true, I have a friend whom is a professional trader on Wall Street...according to him, Rolex futures are way down as everyone is starting to short the market! He says if it keeps up this way, Rolex may have to start buying back it’s own stock and make the company privately owned again!
