AP Royal Oak Movement - Minute hand

Is the 3120 movement more delicate than other watch brands? Curious because when setting the time on my 15450 the minute hand doesn't seem to be as sturdy when setting. Setting the time doesn't seem as precise as the hand seems to be more likely to wiggle around. Other watches I own are pretty rock solid

Any other owners experience the same thing? Is it normal? Watch is new purchased from AD

Perfectly normal, all my APs have quite a lot of play when setting the minute hand. I will leave it to someone properly knowledgeable to explain why

Its a well known quirk of the 3120 movement. I gather its to do with tension in the movement. If you set the time about 30-45 mins past the desired minute, then wind back this relieves the tension and helps prevent it jumping. I also find a short sharp push to re-engage the crown once done helps as it stops any inadvertent turning of the crown when pushing back in.

The movement itself is very robust as quite a few of us who have watches powered by it will attest to.

When setting the minute hand always rotate the minute hand couple/several times before and after the minute setting you want. There is usually some “play”, or “slack”in the hand. Not a defect, it’s in the design. Actually I do it when setting any of my watches regardless of manufacturer. If setting for twelve, set the hour hand. Then move the minute hand back to ten, then foreward to ten, back to eleven, then forward to the five then to the twelve.
