GMT Master II Stainless - Time to Upgrade?
Greetings. I am a noob as regards luxury watches having just gotten interested about six months ago. Starting below the lower end with some $400 and $500 watches, I have quickly progressed through Tags, Omegas, Tudor and made my first Rolex purchase (14060 no date, 2 line) in July. I have also purchased a Rolex for my wife. In this relatively short period of time, I have found that I primarily rotate the Omega Speedmaster, Omega Seamaster and the Rolex during the week while the other 9 or 10 watches sit patiently in the safe...
My question - I am trying to decide (understanding my wear habits) whether it is time to unload the 9 or 10 bystanders and take that money and get the new GMT in stainless with the Jubilee bracelet? I hadn't really even consider getting this Rolex until I read more about it, and I just really LIKE the way the Jubilee looks on it. On the surface it seems like the prudent move...however, being a noob, I would really appreciate your opinions. I have progressed through the four stages of WIS-dom - Trepidation, Fascination, Accumulation and Consolidation. And while I believe I am truly just a "WI" (still lacking the "savant" part), I also believe I am now approacing the Consolidation phase of my watch collecting. Thoughts? |

If you don't mind paying over double the MSRP then I would go for it

hate to say it, but being new to Rolex you wouldn't necessarily be aware that you just cant walk in and get those popular watches. Knowing ahead of time is key as AD staff are likely to be quite rude about it and it might turn you off all together. Not excusing their behavior, but its a steady of stream of people all day, every day asking the same thing.

Since I have no clue what the other 9 or 10 bystanders are I can only go by what you list you normally wear. Taking from that a GMT would fit nicely into that collection. Only you can decide if selling them and waiting years for the BLRO is worth it. That's assuming you don't want to go grey for this piece.

As others have said, you can't buy the Pepsi from an AD right now without a purchase history. So I would wait on it. You can try to have them add your name to the waitlist but most likely they won't until you've bought another watch.
If you like the BLNR you may have a better chance getting that one. It only took about 3 months for me to get my BLNR (but that was with an Explorer already purchased at that AD).

thanks all. really appreciate the feedback. perhaps a 16710 pepsi would work for now...? I am giving that some thought. As for AD or grey, I have purchased everything i have now pre-owned from individuals and found those transactions to be totally acceptable.

I agree that you should let the Rolex hoopla settle down.
There's no hurry and there's nothing wrong with watches that don't meet the criteria for the "luxury" category. What you have sounds pretty nice to me.

LOL...the "other 9 or 10" really aren't worth mentioning here in this forum....couple of Tags being the "highlights". Figure all-in would have some down payment money on a nicely worn 16710 pepsi..... |

No rush, and that thinking never ends well. Take your time, even utilize grey dealers if they have a shop in your area and try on whatever you can. Then pick one you want long term, not just for right now. 16710 is a fine watch, but only if thats what you want and are not settling.

I think the best choice today IMHO would be either find a 16710 in good condition without the new internet crazy prices or get a brand new 116710LN - that is much easier to obtain new from AD. Despite the fact that it's all black it is completely different from the 14060M you already own (and it's my favorite 6 digit GMT). Good luck.

If you have no history at your Rolex AD then you need lots of luck getting one. You're a bit late getting into SS sport but have fun playing the AD game

I did the same thing to acquire a 214270 (39mm Explorer 1) . . . sold some watches and dont miss them THAT much. If you have any that are in the current rotation or hold some sentimental reason for keeping . .. dont do it.
Would agree with others regarding "Wait for the current Increase in Demand and Prices to mellow out". |
