Considering Oris Sixty Five
I love the clean lines and retro diver look of the new Oris Sixty Five 42mm Black on rubber. I need an everyday beater and while I love my Explorer I, not having a date function bothers me. The Oris seems to check all the boxes; date, diver, clean lines, versatile and priced low enough to not worry about everyday hazards. I currently also have a SD4K and Hulk so it would be a nice addition to my diver collection.
So what would the forum do? Stick with the Explorer or go Oris?

They are not quite the same league.
I think keep the Explorer and add a 65 if you enjoy the watch. If you are not going to keep the Explorer, I would at least look at Rolex DJ, or even Omega AT (the latest one has latest and they are highly anti-mag). Maybe Tudor North flag?

As with above comment I consider these watches as completely different animals. I wouldnt consider an explorer/oris 65 an "either or", but rather an "explorer and". If you are not feeling the explorer, maybe try a DJ or variant? Given "beater" is a highly relevant term in terms of value I would hesitate recommending something - it sounds like you are considering something in the 750-1000 range? My "beaters" are a Sinn 104, Seiko SKX033, and Casiotron (child of the 80s). I owned a 65, but ended up selling it to fund an SMPc. Given the choice for an Oris beater I would probably go back to a big crown pilot.

You don't say you're thinking about Flipping the Explorer in the post but if you are, don't. The Oris is a fun watch but I got bored enough with mine to flip to something else.

I’ve had a few and they are great for worryfree use. I now use Tudor for that function.

The Explorer stays either way. I would size it back for my wife to wear. The Oris would be an add. Would the Oris disappoint? Is the Explorer that much more of a watch that I should forget about the date function?

The Explorer is objectively a great watch. That counts next to nothing if the owner is not "feeling" it. If you need a date replace it with a piece that has it.
I don't know if the oris would disappoint you. I have always enjoyed mine, but inevitably tired of them- preferring others in my collection. To be honest I get more joy from the rugged simplicity and blatant unpretentiousness of my skx033 and Hamiltons as weekend beaters than I ever did with the Oris's. If you have tried the Oris and love it; get it. |

I have the 40mm oris sixty five on a tropical rubber strap and love it. At its price point it will be one that I never flip. With that said, I also have an explorer and as others have said , two completely diff watches. I think they fit well into a collection together.
