Unauthorized Dealers?
My son asked me why they're called "Grey Dealers"
rather than "Unauthorized Dealers". I thought it was a pretty good question. |

Unauthorized Dealers?
Based on recent experiences, I might recommend calling them “Preferred Dealers” or perhaps “Dealers Who Actually Sell Watches”.

It is a gray area as to whether the watches are new or second hand.

I'm not sure I'd call them unauthorized dealers. These are individuals/businesses selling property they own. If one is prohibited from re-selling their property, where is the line drawn? In my opinion, there is a difference between not being within an authorized distribution network and being unauthorized. The term was created by the manufacturers in a manner that resembled "black market" so that potential buyers would be leery of such sellers.
....and it certainly isn't illegal, at least according to the Supreme Court https://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-...y-market-goods |

Black market is smuggled, ill obtained material. Grey is between black and white.

How I understand it. You could also include counterfeit in black market. ie it's really bad. Grey is comparatively 'ok'

Here ya go, I knew I read that somewhere. With a quick search, I found it, "The term 'grey market' was coined by manufacturers in the 1980s to refer to the resold goods. The producers created this name in a bid to inspire fear in customers and cause them to think that purchasing grey market goods was illegal, as with black market goods. The objective of the makers of these products was to encourage customers to buy directly from them."

Grey market is what employees of AD's, take part in. Bit of extra cash on the side.
