Ok I just bought my first Submariner about three or four weeks ago and I love it. I found a friend of a friend who is wanting to sell his Explorer to me. He sent me some pics which I will add on here so you experts can take a look at it. He also send me a pic of the top of the paperwork with the serial number and style number. To a new person like me it looks like the real deal, but as we all know buying from a individual and being new to this that can be very dangerous. I am wanting to be cautious. Can someone help me to see if this is a real watch, and explain to me what I can do with the paperwork? Any help or thoughts would be great, I am trying to learn and understand all of these things. Also what is a fair price for something like this? I looked and it seemed to be a mid 01? Is that part correct. Well post what you want to share with me. Thanks guys you are all great.

unfortunately that is not a GMT, but an explorer II......... is he representing it as such?

also the watch doesnt have solid end links (SEL) so that may give us an idea of its age along with it being a K series- i am uncertain when the explorer II started with the SEL or when the K series ran....... others on here will know......

all things considered i would say that you should pay no more than 3 to 3.5K US $$ for this watch... does that seem in line with what he is asking?

The Explorer watch is a very nice model to have. It is smaller than your Submariner, and more discrete ('It doesn't scream Rolex'). The Explorer models don't seem to hold their value quite as much as the Subs and GMT's do, so make sure you are getting a good price. There are always plenty of 2nd hand Explorer's for sale on EBAY that you can choose from.

Ask if there is a store receipt with the watch, and if your friend is the original owner (Did he purchase the watch brand new himself).

You could always ask to have the watch looked at by an AD if you are still unsure. They should be able to tell you if it's geniune or not.

I have the same watch but mine is a Z serial. You can find recent serial models for very good price online. I just saw one for sale with D serial running at $3,600.

Thanks for the info and tips, I really appreciate it. I really want a GMT so I guess if this is a watch that does not scream Rolex, I better wait and get my hands on a GMT.

An Explorer is not a "GMT". However, it has a GMT movement for telling time in another time zone. The fourth (red) hand works off the bezel because it makes one revolution in 24 hours. The difference is that Explorer's bezel does not rotate as the GMT's does! The idea in this case is to be able to tell time in a cave or other environment where there is no sunlight to say if it's day or night, hence its name. A GMT is for telling time in different time zones, and it was originally a pilot's watch designed at the behest of Pan-Am and issued to its aircrews. Excellent for flying long-distance, critically important for navigational accuracy back in the day.

Its difficult to see if a watch is genuine using only photos. A good seller will have no problem with you verifying authenticity with a watchmaker or AD. This one looks good...but someone familiar is better.

3-3.5K is probably a good price, depending if the piece needs service (count on 400-500 if it does, and that should happen every 4-5 years). It looks like a nice example of a popular Rolex with dedicated fans. Its just not as popular as some others, but a great one nonetheless!

Personally, I like it, and if you could verify a good history of care, I'd go for it!

It looks like a year 2001 genuine and very beautiful Explorer II to me.

On the fake Explorers the first thing to notice is the bezel. It's just ain't perfect.

A price idea here in Denmark would be 23000 DKR - equivalent to
$4300 evaluated from your picture
