I already picked up Kentucky Owl Bourbon Batch 8 and Rye Batch 2... I found a Kentucky Owl Batch 6, which I've heard is possibly the best of them all, but hadn't thought of spending that much on it.

I get what you're saying about overspending for a specific year; why pay $500+ for something that was only $10 back in 1984... and anything worth a pretty penny then would be significantly more now...

Yeah, I paid $300 for the bourbon and $195 for the rye... going rate, basically MSRP, and I've seen them for much more. The bourbon is a great pour, I don't care what anyone says about the growth of the brand, it is worth every penny. Haven't tried the rye yet, picked it up blind. We'll see...

I tried it in a bar and loved it. That's my usual method before a major booze purchase (over $75)

It’s almost become a thing for some bars to stock an obscene number of bottles. There’s not much you cannot find, at least with regards to current production stuff. Finding for a palatable price is another story

Some guys sell and trade 2 ounce pours on the bourbon groups as well. That’s the best way.

Bars are probably much better in the US, not much to find here, except for bars in bigger cities. Oh and yes, prices are insane. €12 for a glass of lagavulin 16, no thanks

6 is hands down the best IMO.

I snagged a Batch 8 and a Weller CYPB.

I’d trade both for a Batch 6.

Luckily I live in a decent-sized city with lots of casinos (i.e., lots of money floating around) which lends itself to higher end booze joints with lots of buying power. One of our casino bars has several hundred bottles of different bourbon, alone, not counting the hundreds of Scotch pours... It's quite impressive. But, with that comes the price tag. It's always more expensive by the shot than to buy the bottle outright, you know?

In the long run yes, but you don't want to buy an entire bottle only to find after the first sip that you absolutely hate it.

Totally agree, wasn't advocating otherwise. The only time I would do it is if I find something that isn't made any more (i.e., a Stitzel-Weller bottle) and am willing to take that chance. Anything in current production? There's always somewhere to try it before. My comment was simply a matter of fact, that shots are expensive.

Prices are not too good here either. A lot of bars will buy bottles at secondary and then mark up again just to keep the good stuff in stock

I'm probably in the minority, but I don't eat while drinking my whiskey. I reserve wines and beer for that.
