Timekeeping issue

Hi All,

I have a GMTIIc and I had it regulated around 12 months ago. Ever since then it runs on average at about +1 or 2 seconds per day. A few weeks ago whilst using the WatchTracker app I noticed that on one day the watch was at +1.4 seconds per day and then the next day at -2.4 seconds per day. I reset the timing and everything was back to normal again. Yesterday I noticed that the timing was +1 per day (absolutely normal) and then this morning it showed up as -6.2 per day. Im just wondering why there would randomly be a 7 second change in accuracy but then this gets fixed itself if I am to reset the watch. I’m sure that if the watch was to continue running it would start gaining time and go back to normal but why the sudden random blip?

I also didn’t do anything out of the ordinary on the day of the -6 result so can’t put it down to anything.

Any ideas for advice would be necessary.

There are too many possible causes of a 'momentary blip' to list them all, and to guess at it without looking at the movement would be irresponsible of me. It is likely nothing though. Top of the list would be was the watch fully wound or not?

Take my advice get rid of all your timing apps then perhaps you will start to enjoy your watch more, instead of worrying over a few seconds out of 86400 in a day.

OP, the accuracy of mechanical movements can be influenced by many factors: temperature, gravity, power reserve, wearing pattern throughout the day.
It is also influenced by how you rest the watch at night (dial up to gain seconds, crown down to lose).
I would take Peter's advice on this, your life won't be influenced by a couple of seconds lost or gained in a day.
If you are too worried about this, then a mechanical time piece is not for you and you should try a quartz watch.

Let’s not forget about the accuracy of the app in question...

If you are going to keep up with the time I would do it every other day or once a week. If you do in shorter time frames It might not give you a true measure.

This is the best response so far? Thank you! My only concern is that I don’t want something to be wrong with the watch and if there is, I want to take action. The watch at that point was not fully wound and was running down almost to stop. The only thing I can think of is I was at home working and didn’t really do the normal things I would have done.

I don’t want to take it to RSC in London and have the watch opened for nothing If there is no issue.

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Because we spend a good amount of money on our watches we tend to be a little OCD about them, but after a while you will realize it's not worth the stress.

Just wear it normally for a month. Try resting it differently when you take it off at night, that has a factor in the speed of the timekeeping.

Re-test after 1 or 2 months and see if the issue is still there. If so then maybe consider bringing it in.

So many factors and possibilities. Take it to a pro, or keep an eye on it another week or so.
