Second Thoughts? What To Do?

In reading a number of posts over time, it appears that numerous TRFers either regret having purchased a particular model or after having purchased a model, sold it, regretted this decision and purchased it again. Please share your stories, regrets, doubts and how you ultimately resolved your concerns. If your concerns are unresolved, please discuss them too (others will be able to relate).

I'm an idiot . I just buy, buy buy!!! No regrets bar the White dial Milgauss. I only bought it because it was relatively rare at the time. Hardly gets any wrist time now, although I have worn it today!! I'd sell it but that's just not my thing unfortunately. I'm not a seller, I'm a collector albeit a rather impulsive one at that!!!

yes, my dj was the one that gave me the most grief. it was my very first rolex and it's not brand new. i got it for a fair price. i bought it because i'm a very thrifty guy and i just wanted to experience to feel how to own a rolex and that was the cheapest rolex i could find at that time. it never really smiled back to me. i've tried to sell it so many times even to lose money and to so different places i was even willing to ship the watch first. Things became even worst when i got introduced to the professional models. How was it resolved? i was not able to sell it but it's now my daily beater and realized how amazingly comfortable it is and it's my birth watch so the resolution was that i made it into my beater.

I always liked the look of the white dial Explorer 2, so when the chance arose to buy it cheaper overseas, I took it. Somehow, it never looked right on my wrist and after 5 years, I sold it. Took a $400 loss but used the money to partly fund the purchase of a Blue TT Sub which I have to say, gives me much greater satisfaction!

I had a vintage Sub 1680 and in 1996 really liked the look of the new Subs with the white gold surrounds ie 16610. I ended up trading in the vintage 1680 for $2.5k and bought a new one for $3.6k. The new Sub was nice but then I wish I had both of them. I decided if I was going to buy a vintage Sub it would need to be a Red Sub...so I bought that one. I have only sold 2 Rolex watches the other was to my brother. At 33 mm it was just to small for my wrist. It was a vintage Datejust from the 1950's. On a side note, that is why I try to stay away from purchasing brand new watches. Searching for that older Rolex in the condition desired with the important documentation is the fun part. Most older watches are already depreciated, so you are less likey to take the financial hicky if you decide to sell

The only watch I have bought & quickly sold was a TT GMT 16753, but it was sold to fund a Sub 1680 that I enjoy much better....so no regrets!

hi
well i normally dont sell.my guiding principle is that i like/love the watch that i cant resist it as if i always look and look at the display window of the AD everytime i pass by. and the most impt is that i can afford to pay cash on it.i've been considering selling my 2 rolex watches namely yachtmaster platinum and submariner two tone black dial since last year but up to now still cant let go.hahaha.theres some sort of attachment in a way.honestly though i sold before my explorer2 and ss sub to buy something else or to upgrade and diversify what i have.no single day i dont look at my watches.its an expensive thing to be in i must say..

Good point you've raised there, Taffi.

My mistake was buying a DJ which I then began to regret because of the piddly 36 mm size which I found too small for my wrist.

Sold it a few months later; so the moral of the story is THINK before you buy and buy ONLY that which REALLY smiles back at you.

Don't buy just 'cause you want to keep up with the Jonses or because you think it's a kind of fashion model which others have so you must have one also.

I think a bit of careful planning and thinking goes a long way in helping you choose the RIGHT watch which you are then truly happy with.

Good advice. I almost bought matching DJ's for the financee and I and thanks to the readers here I didn't make that mistake. I knew I wouldn't have been happy with it after reading a reply from bodybump realizing the DJ never "smiled back" at me. Now I'm just trying to decide which has a bigger smile-kermit sub or GMTIIc. The wife can wait until I can afford a DD and matching DJ for her LOL...

I'm with charliec and JJ. If that makes sense!

I see so many watches that I like that I just BUY BUY BUY. But if I do see something I like I give it a few days, check it over again and if I still like it.Buy it. After all its my money and hopefully its going to be spending a lot of wrist time with me.

I did have a Datejust that I loved, even though it was smaller than the 40mm daily beater I wear. When it arrived I thought no way. But I use it a lot and have just had a black dial with ss jubilee arrive, that to be honest I had made my mind up I wasn't going to have. Guess what. As soon as I opened the box it shut me up- which takes some doing- it was fabulous. ( or I think so anyway)

So the answer is - No I have never regretted buying a watch, even my others.
Advice wise you won't do better than JJ

Best of luck

Si

My lovely wife Leah purchased my TT Tahitian dial YM for our 10th anniversary. I suppose my only regret is that I waited so long to get it. I should have purchased it myself years ago, but the fact that she researched and was the one to purchase it for me makes it all the sweeter. Not to mention that is was a 10th anniversary gift from the love of my life.

I spent several years determining what Rolex would make me truly happy. Which of their many timepieces would "smile back at me". This YM was my only choice.

What a magnificent watch! I know you were recently in Philly, did you buy it here? BTW, wear it in good health.

In 1983 my wife bought me a TT (yes) TT Daytona from an AD in San Antonio Texas. I have since seen only one other late 70's or early 80's TT Daytona.
I sold it not knowing the market in 1990 while our business was really hurting.
Sold it for $2200 which was more than it cost was new...The very next day I had a bank wire on a business deal...long story short, if I had waited one day I would not have had to sell it....to make matters worse later that week I discovered they were trading at about 8K.
Now we all know what they sell for in todays market. Don't know that I will ever sell another Rolex... I do have other watches in my collection that I would part with and have in the past without any regrets. The vintage Daytona is NOT one. I have given one away to my Son-in-Law with the understanding that he will one day pass it along, that's keeping it in the family and not the same as selling. Of course I let him along with my daugther that I would be really p*** if he ever sold it.

i researched for months looking to buy 'the watch'. at last i narrowed it down to two: the speedy pro and the air-king. my previous nicest watch had been a tag f1, so both of these were a big step up in terms of quality and $$$. eventually i chose the ak because it seemed perfectly suited to my (pencil neck) wrist and aesthetic tastes. initially i had some doubts (what the f@*&k did i just do?) as to the wisdom of my purchase - as much as this blue collar guy likes watches, 4 grrr is a lot of money to part with to have one - but after a week or two i settled in and made friends with my new pal. now, almost a year later, i'm happy with my purchase. i'm a one watch guy, and this rolex covers all the bases for me.
