A bit of a ramble....

1 thing is certain in all these Baselworld 2019 "teasers" that is that Tudor (Rolex group) are doing a great job with their marketing. All the clues point to the re-release of a version of the Tudor Submariner which if true is a massive decision from Rolex to sanction a readily available version of their most iconic and best selling SS Professional watch.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Rolex Submariner Date ref 1680, so I think we can expect a special version from Rolex to mark that, I also expect a Tudor version of the same watch and perhaps a couple of other Tudor variants.

Looking back at the 2018 release of the Rolex and Tudor GMTs I think Rolex were testing the water a little. The 126710BLRO was a much awaited model and the hype must have accounted for a fair chunk of Tudor BB GMT sales.

My Speculation:
Rolex (group) are looking at a future trading model where Rolex branded SS Professional watches will become less and less readily available and that more accessible versions will be available with Tudor branding. Rolex will expand the PM range and reduce SS availability. Tudor will have a SS range that mirrors (within reason) the Rolex SS professional range. I also think Tudor need to retire a lot of the current range, I think there is a lot of dead wood there.

My Reasoning:
To try to generate more profit by selling more Rolex branded watches would dilute the exclusivity of the brand but selling less Rolex branded watches and increasing exclusivity of the brand allows them to generate a far greater profit through increased sales through Tudor.

just a few random thoughts............

I think Rolex makes a smaller profit percentage on Tudor than on their Rolex line. PM watches can never become their mainstay, it’s just too expensive for the average buyer.
iMHO the Tudors are great, but much of that excitement is that they are made by Rolex.
Tudor gives them an affordable way to experiment without marring the Rolex brand.
Start newbies with Boxters first. Maybe they’ll turn into 911 Turbo buyers later !!

hmm.. right.. so they want to sell less $9k models with higher margins and more $4k models
And I think Rolex is already pretty exclusive
