looking for a vintage sub

So i have decided i want to branch out of my norm and get away from the modern era. I really have been wanting a vintage submariner. can some one help me out in what I should look for in buying an older piece? I was thinking 70's or early 80's era. I just do not know what to look for with a piece that is 30-40 years old? what would stir one away from purchasing and what is something you want to see in an older piece.

I do not know much about vintage and would like to learn......

I recommend checking out the useful stickies in this sub-forum too.

Also, if you are looking for a Submariner, decide whether you're after a Sub Date or Sub.

For example, for a Sub Date, you may want a 1680 or 16800. If it's a 1680, I recommend reading DRSD.com which has extensive information about red submariners and white submariners. If it's a 5513 with matte dial you're after, then 5513mattedial.com is recommended reading.
