A good way to find wines that you can try in Napa is to follow the winemaker and not the label. For example Philippe Melka in addition to his own label is the winemaker for 29 other wine estates in Napa. If you like his wine you could find a bottle in your budget and wine style at a number of these 29 estates. Another great winemaker is Robert Foley, Mike Smith, they all consult elsewhere. A little internet research will give you more in Napa and around the world like this.

Just keep in mind that consulting in Napa can mean a lot of different things and can have varying degrees of involvement. Depends on what the owners want and what that winemakers is willing to provide. Some winemakers really do reach a certain level of notoriety and then sell their name to up and comers as way to add interest and credibility so take consulting tags with grain of salt and look for winemakers who's style you like and pledge to be hands on with their clients.

I think if you are dealing with people like Melka and Mike Smith you will only have excellent results. These are some of the worlds greatest winemakers. Highly respected all round.

Fun wine tasting this afternoon as part of a local steak house's wine club. Exploring different takes on DuBrul vineyard's fruit (hosted by Cote Bonneville winemaker Kerry Shiels), as well as getting to compare across vintages.

The Owen Roe merlot surprisingly scored at the top of my list

How was that 15 Tignanello? I’ve got some older vintages that are great - and have always love the earthiness aspect of it - but it always takes SO long to open up (not that - that is a problem!!!!)

I think the youngest vintage I have is a 12

Hi Roger, the vintages I still have go back to 2008. The 2015 is interesting in that they blended the various components much earlier resulting in a more accessible vintage than previous years. Previously they aged each cultivar separately and bending them later on. It is an excellent vintage of Tig, and while it tasted great so young, I would age my remaining 2015’s before I drink them.

Another cracker of an Aussie red, this time from the Clare Valley region of South Australia.
Cost A$13. when purchased in 2012 and now drinking like a $40. wine.
Rich and full-bodied, full of life with an elegant nose and well balanced with some oak.
Wish I had bought a couple of cases of this!

Anything from the Coonawarra works for me, Jesse.
We are truly blessed in A/NZ with so many great wine producers and so much good wine at such cheap prices. I have given the NZ Marlborough wines a hell of a hiding over 4 decades. (visited the wineries in the early '80s)
